can't send mail to greylist server - timeout after EHLO

Two of our geographically separate DA boxes are having trouble sending to the same third party mailserver which uses greylisting.

Our servers get the initial 451 error message, but don't seem to retry soon enough to get on the whitelist. I understand there is a passtime and greyexp time. If I find out what the third party uses for these values, how can I change the retry section of exim.conf?

In other words if passtime is 30 minutes and greyexp is four hours, how do I make sure exim retries in that time window?
