We currently have some CentOS 3.x based VPS host servers (running 5-10 VPSes each) and we're going to be upgrading them to new servers running CentOS 5.x, which means that we'll also be upgrading our base VPS OS to CentOS 5.x as well.

What's the best way to tackle that in terms of recreating the DirectAdmin installs on the new servers? How best to tackle the licensing? Has anyone done this and have any advice/tips on what to do, or not to do? Thanks!

Contact DirectAdmin Sales for information on temporary licenses for moving services between two servers.

Install DirectAdmin on the new server using CustomBuild, either using the same versions of the hosting stuck, or newer versions, as you wish/require.

You may choose to use Dovecot/Maildir even if you've not used it on the old server (see notes below).

Add any services/packages/updates to the new server that you've made to the old, such as installing new Perl modules, Apache Modules, SpamAssassin, ClamAV, etc. You may choose to switch to a later version of the SpamBlocker-Powered exim.conf file.

Then use DirectAdmin's Admin Reseller Backup Transfer system to backup the server. Move the backups to the new server and restore them.

Make changes to your desktop's DNS so you can look at the sites and make sure they work.

When you know they work, do the backup/transfer/restore again, this time with the sites all suspended, and unsuspend them on the new server. Why? So people won't keep posting stuff on the sites on the old server which will never show up, and so that no more mail will end up on the new server.
