Server locks up during a backup using backup/restore in DA

From top, the task goes up to nearly 1000 from 250, load goes up to 200+, all sites inaccessible.

The site is very small only about 500mb. What's wrong?

Maybe a load issue?
Even without using backup, the server load is between 2-4.
Anyway to tweak the backup to low priority background process?
 
Check to make sure you're not using swap memory. If you are, you should probably clear it (the easiest way is to restart the server).

I know there is a command to clear the swap memory without rebooting but this server was not using any swap at the time of backup. While doing the backup I see the task go up a lot as well as the load. The swap also went from 0 to 1G.

Any bugs affecting DA that would cause backup to crash the server?
 
Would it be possible for you to post the output of 'free -m'
Before the backup and during when the swap usage is high?

Lots of use the backup all the time without problem. The problem is relatd to the swap going up, so user propcgamer has asked the right question and someone may be able to help you once you're responded.
