I am new to all of this, I have done some reading through the site and find it very informative but I am still having troubles, if someone could walk me through this I would be very greatfull.

I have recently purchased a server and have 2 free IP(s) + the server ip:
38.119.156.23 - server ip
38.119.156.31 - free (want as nameserver #1)
38.119.156.33 - free (want as nameserver #2)

I want to run a site (trancetraffic.com) off of this server using the ns1.trancetraffic.com and ns2.trancetraffic.com as nameserver (obvious).

Now I have registered the trancetraffic.com domain, and have email the registrar to change the record so that:
ns1.trancetraffic.com 38.119.156.31
ns2.trancetraffic.com 38.119.156.33

.. and they said they have done so.

Now, if I visit http://38.119.156.23/~trancetraf/ it goes to the home-page, that's correct.

How do I go about pointing trancetraffic.com to that page, can someone please verify through a WHOIS that my settings are correct?

Also, can someone very roughly walk me through the DA setup to verify that all settings are correct?

I have not created any users, only the reseller "trancetraf" to use as the account that will host my trancetraffic.com site.

Here are some screenshots of my the way my configurations looks while logged in as admin, and then as the reseller (trancetraf):

and the reseller login:

The ns records are correct; you should be able to verify it through your registrar's whois page.

Or at mine:
http://domains.nobaloney.net

Then click on whois on the top menubar.

Presuming you want your site on the shared server IP#, most of your settings are correct.

If you want to create your site under a reseller then you should either create the site in the reseller's User panel, or create a new user under the reseller, and create the site there.
Click on the checkboxes for the IP#s marked as free, then click on "create".

Hmm... well everything seems as if its setup right. I also went ahead and logged in as the reseller and created the domain/user trancetraffic.com from there under the username "zdrux"

http://38.119.156.23/~zdrux

the above address works fine, but why doesnt trancetraffic.com work at all?!.. any ideas?! I cant even ping it, its as if its not pointing to the right IP, but WHOIS reports the correct IP(s) and I can ping those, anybody know whats going on?

What do you get when you issue an nslookup command from your desktop commandline?

C:\> nslookup trancetraffic.com

???

Jeff

C:\Documents and Settings\zdrux>nslookup trancetraffic.com
Server: nscsim08.bellnexxia.net
Address: 206.47.244.52

*** nscsim08.bellnexxia.net can't find trancetraffic.com: Server failed

.. thats the message I receive in my dos window. Any clues?

hop #10 indicates my dedicated server's ip?!..
does "trancetraffic.com" resolve for anybody else reading this? Can it be pinged atleast?

wow, magically after writing this message I can ping AND visit trancetraffic.com !! Hmm... I could have sworn I waited long enough for the dns info to propagate, it must have been atleast 3.5days or so.. maybe my ISP is the last on the list to update their DNS.

.. either way, it seems that my site now works, thanks to everybody who helped me out, this is really a great site/resource.

zdrux,

I've seen this effect often enough on Windows (which we don't use here) that I'm beginning to think that your local Windows system stores IP#s and doesn't force a new lookup, but that running the traceroute does.
