Mailpile beta should be released today

    https://www.mailpile.is/

Please let me know your opinion about it I think it's going to be a strong competition to RoundCube.

It's been a week and no one has replied to you. Are we tired of reading/writing about better webmail clients only to never see them implemented?

I've just finished migrating all our client to a new hareware/software platform so I can start telling all of them they they can all now use RoundCube. But should I wait?

I like the design. But I also like Horde Webmail. And I also like some commercial solutions I've discussed in these forums.

After doing the migration, and getting some grief from clients moving one RoundCube capable server to another, I don't want to again move users who use an email client for which I can't easily export/import user data, or even backup/restore it. I'm not writing about mailbox contents, but rather things like address books and identities, as well as other settings.

I know John has started looking into this for RoundCube, and I hope he's continuing his effort. None of us like restoring incomplee backups, and so far you can only restore a whole-machine backup of RoundCube data .

I've tried to find out about import/export/backup/restore from other vendors, both open source and commercial, and so far no one has given me a reply . I find it hard to believe no one besides me considers this important enough to implement.

The MailPile website makes a big deal of moving off free solutions, but moving off any solution needs to be painless, or not too many clients (especially those, with lots of email users, who would benefit most) will be willing to do it.

So, yes... I like the look. But I don't know if I want to go through the pain of a migration for myself, to be willing to use it, and if I offer it I don't know how many of my cliens will be willing to use it.

I think John is going to finish RC backup/restore soon You could mail him about ETA for that, but it's not as hard as it was supposed to be, and I already had that done with simple pre/post backup scripts. Talking about MailPile, it doesn't use MySQL database at all, and it stores user information in files (something like SquirrelMail). They postponed their beta release a bit: https://www.mailpile.is/blog/, but it should be ready in a few days

    Done .

I wish I had known about that before moving a few thousand users

Which is preferable from my point of view; a simple bit of code in CustomBuild makes it all work, for update then. And a simple bit of code make it all work during backup/restore. Either in the Backup/Restore programs, or in pre-post scripts. Am I correct? if so then I'm very interested.

I noticed. And I likely won't use it until it's out of beta, but I'm very interested .

I've got a working implementation of the RoundCube backup/restore within DA.
    https://www.directadmin.com/features.php?id=1062

I'm uploading the pre-release binaries and scripts now, so feel free to try it out (will likely need some testing)
It includes everything in RoundCube.. and should do so as efficiently as possible, so shouldn't hurt the backup/restore process too badly (it only grabs the list of emails that exist in RC).

    John,

I'm not sure what you mean by this:
With per email backup/restore functionality, we'd likely swtich to use RoundCube as the default webmail client, but lack of command line backup/restore prevents us from doing so.
While I generally don't test beta software on my working machines (and at the moment that's all Ihave), I suppose I can try it on two servers and move some little-used accounts between them just to see if it works as well as I think it should. But obviously that won't be a fair test.

Do your pre-release binaries include any other stuff which I shuld be aware of which may cause issues? (Remember, these will need to be on live servers.)

    Thanks.

    Yes, plenty of goodies:
    http://www.directadmin.com/versions....rsion=1.460000

although, I'm not sure how many of them should actually be a concern.

Going through the list.. things that may affect a production box:

    - Restore changes if you're going back and forth between IPv4/IPv6 IPs: http://www.directadmin.com/features.php?id=1623
    - System File permission changes: http://www.directadmin.com/features.php?id=1624
    - phpMyAdmin/Squirrelmail BFM monitoring: http://www.directadmin.com/features.php?id=1614
    - the HAVE_PHP1_FPM_OLD template bits are gone, but if you're running Apache 2.4.10, or not running php-fpm, it wouldn't matter: http://www.directadmin.com/features.php?id=1630
    - If a DA User reaches their email limit via php script, DA will now figure out and tell you which php script did it (using ~/.php/php-mail.log*), and can chmod to 0 if you want (chmod off by default): http://www.directadmin.com/features.php?id=1636
    - PHP selector fixed for CB2 with mod_php and suPHP, if you run 2 versions of PHP: http://www.directadmin.com/features.php?id=1622

We are running the latest pre-release binaries on a live production test box, and haven't run into anything as of yet.

Well, I've had a look at the Alpha and it seems to be roundcube + Google UI + easy encryption.
Plugins (and the community) will make the difference I guess, but I don't see anything revolutionary in the project.

It's not just another RoundCube webmail-client That's why it might be harder to make it work on DA servers. They have more info in they FAQs and docs about what it really is and how it works.

It's a vault accessible via a web interface, so it's nice to archive data, but users will be completely dependant on the apps functionalities to be able to read their mail from a mobile device per example and won't be able to read them from another client. It's a good idea for a desktop, but I'm not sure it works as a webmail solution.

    Just my two cents here...

I do use RoundCube with myRoundCube plugins which have a lot of useful stuffs.

For example, i was able to implement a DAV server using SabreDAV (Based on PHP/MySQL) and useing myroundcube plugins i'd the ability to provide to users two gourgerous things, CalDAV and CardDAV.

So, on webmail side, customer have Address Book and Calendar accessible, and, if they want to, they can configure mail clients (like for example Thunderbird/Lightning) to use DAV for Address Book and Calendar to have them sync between server-client-webmail-mobile.

The mobile section aswell, on android there are two usefull apps for caldav and carddav that cost about 5€ and allow you to sync your phone calendar/address book with a defined DAV server.

So, for example, in my case i do have everything in sync with my DAV server and have not to be worried about add a phone number on my webmail and remember to write down to my mobile phone aswell, or, same for appointment If a customer does send me an calendar invitation, i can take it from any device, and have it synced with all my devices.

I know that those things require a little of work (not that much trust me) and a little of money (myroundcube plugins should cost about 10/15€ in total per server, but, if you centralize the webmail as i did, the cost stay to 10/15€) and, everyuser will need to spend (if they wanna have this, and its not mandatory) about 5€ to have their mobile phone synced, but the result is a pretty nice struture with all needed functionality for a businnes-web-application that permit to manage all those stuff.

If anyone wanna take a ride, just send me a PM and i'll get an e-mail account to test this.

Hope that this may be useful to someone

There should be a wiki/post about what can be done to offer mobile synchronisation.

Regarding the Caldav backend, Owncloud is a good and easy one to set up and there is also Baikal.

It works with any DAV server, but with some you don't get "support for resources auto-creation when users login", which means you have to use posts scripts to add/remove users.

    You're right.

I was thinking about it right now before read your post and yes, the only problem is that you need to manually (or with some pre/post script) create users on DAV side related to e-mail creation.

At the moment i dont remember if actually those scripts does exist but i suppose yes, and, in any case that DA Staff would create them in case we need them

It's not designed for the hosting business as using it on a 3rd party server defeats its main purpose: privacy. Also, DA and CB don't support Python.

I do not understand you in this point. Why could you not install it on your hosting server and use it as mail client? It is designed as a mail client when I read the site. Privacy is kept by the hosting provider. Python could be installed.
