Preference file, /var/www/html/squirrelmail/data/emailxx.pref.tmp cannot be opened

I get the error when logging into SquirrelMail:
Preference file, /var/www/html/squirrelmail/data/EMAILADRESS.pref.tmp, could not be opened. Contact your system administrator to resolve this issue.

Can anyone explain how to fix this? If this is not easy to fix can you suggest anyone that can help me fix this? I have had Direct Admin for years and do not know how this problem was created.

That's most likely due to wrong permissions on files and/or directories. If you use Directadmin for years it might turn out that you use custombuild 1.x and apache with mod_php, if this is the case then you might need to migrate to custombuild 2.0. As suggested above you need to migrate to custombuild 2.0 and build PHP with mod_ruid2 or use PHP-FPM/fastcgi.
