Hi Guys,

I have a problem with my E-com site where e-mails to Hotmail customers land in their Spambox. I've checked everything and it looks like DKIM fails, which might be the problem. I've read a lot of posts and tried most stuff I found, but with no luck. I recently checked other domains on the same VPS and their DKIM doesn't fail.

I've tested it through http://www.appmaildev.com/en/dkim and this is the result:

[B]DKIM-Result: fail (bad signature)[/B]

Same with GlockApp on Microsoft mails it lands in spam:
Code:
spf=pass (sender IP is 37.97.152.13) smtp.mailfrom=speedropeshop.nl; glockeasymail.com; dkim=fail (signature did not verify) header.d=speedropeshop.nl;glockeasymail.com; dmarc=pass action=none header.from=speedropeshop.nl;

I hope you guys can help. I'm getting pretty desperate now.

FWIW, Hotmail can drop email in junk boxes even when everything passes....... I'm having this issue, still trying to find out why..

I found out that copying DKIM key from directadmin places spaces in the key. That's why it's failed. Still finding out why outlook 365 puts it in spam.

@peter
Have you tried glockapps yet?

I read something about that my server is .com and my domain is .nl and somehow outlook 365 doesn't accept DKIM then. It needs to share public keys, still need to investigate.

Check if your dkim key maybe have some spaces, DA breaks the key sometimes and when you copy/past a record there could be unwilling spaces in the key.

@Peter Laws:
still trying to find out why..
Your issue is not only a DKIM issue. You should reply in your own thread if you still searching to find things out, because it's probably something completely different. Especially if you don't follow suggestions made in that thread (see my post #3) or don't post the outcome in there.

@Rvandenbussche: I'm curious about the outcome of your test too.
And indeed check Awd's tip!

Partly solved

Hi Guys,

A little update: I got a little further in the process. DKIM doesn't fail at most email providers anymore. It was exactly the problem Awd said. I'm a little embarrassed about this.

However: Outlook 365 doesn't validate the DKIM. I understand that they use a stricter validation. And this is the problem:

My server is called server.domainname.com which has several domains hosted. The domain i'm trying to send email from is domainname.nl. If I send emails from domainname.com it gets passed through Outlook 365 strict DKIM validation. I think this can be setup just like a bulkemailer sending mail for other domains, but I don't know how to set this up. Does anyone has an idea?

As addition on above:

When sending an email by the system (Wordpress) it says:

Code:
from username by server.domainname[U].com[/U] with local (Exim 4.83) (envelope-from <username@domainname[U].nl[/U]>) id 1evt3q-0001d8-45; Wed, 14 Mar 2018 00:10:26 +0100

It might be solved as well when system doesn't send mails from the server.domainname.com but from domainname.nl. How do I change this?

Fixed!

Hurray, I fixed it!
After all it was something little but I couldn't find much on it on the interwebs.

Outlook / Hotmail seems pretty strict on handling DKIM and you need to specify which parts will be present in your header. Here is the solution if you get this error on Outlook, Hotmail: dkim=fail (signature did not verify).

If you didn't follow this tutorial yet please do it now.

After this go to the exim.dkim.conf file and add the following line in the bottom:

Code:
dkim_sign_headers = from:user-agent:message-id:date

The line above might be a little different on your setup. Here's how to find out what yours might be.

Look at your DKIM header. Mine said:

Code:
from user by server.domain.com with local (Exim 4.83) (envelope-from ) id xx-0000123-0K; Mon, 19 Mar 2018 21:04:41 +0100

So my kim_sign_headers = from (from user by server.domain.com):user-agent(with local (Exim 4.83)):message-id (id xx-0000123-0K;):date(Mon, 19 Mar 2018 21:04:41 +0100)

You can choose from the following list:
Code:
to:from:subject:message-id:date:user-agent:mime-version:content-transfer-encoding

restart the exim service (service exim restart)

and DKIM should be all good with Outlook / Hotmail.

I've tested everything with glockapps.com it helped A LOT!

Thank you for sharing, however, did you also tried without that line, after you followed the Directadmin tutorial?

Because I don't have that line in my exim.dkim.conf and it does not seem necessary when your Exim -is- sending the dkim headers.
The documentation for this option says:
OPTIONAL: When set, this option must expand to (or be specified as) a colon-separated list of header names. Headers with these names will be included in the message signature. When unspecified, the header names recommended in RFC4871 will be used.
So in your case the RFC4871 headers are used, but you are now overriding them with this option, which in fact sends the same headers as when you did not include that line.

I just tested at glockapps (thanks for the tip), and my result was 95,8% to inbox. Missing 2,8% which are to some Brazilian email address, to Network Solutions which for some reason used a wrong Sender IP 209.17.115.190 which I never used or send e-mail via, so this is a problem on their side. Some freenet.de email addres... So everything was fine.

I had 0 analysis and 0 suggestions so this is great. And this is without the line you described, but with the default configuration which was made by following first the activation of dkim and after that the DA tutorial for it sevearl months ago.

So imho your tips are great but the extra line in exim.dkim.conf does have no use if you already see exim headers in your mail. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Code:
from user by server.domain.com with local (Exim 4.83) (envelope-from ) id xx-0000123-0K; Mon, 19 Mar 2018 21:04:41 +0100

Mine looks like this:

Code:
Received: from DNS ([IP] helo=NAME PC)
	by srv.DOMAIN.com with esmtpsa (TLSv1.2:ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384:256)

I also tried:
Code:
dkim_sign_headers = from:user-agent:message-id:date

but signature still fails (hotmail only). Which code should I use?

...So imho your tips are great but the extra line in exim.dkim.conf does have no use if you already see exim headers in your mail. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Exim says it sends more headers that it actually does. Outlook and Hotmail see it as an altered DKIM header because system says it sends A, B, C, D and E but it only receives B, C and E. So in their terms it fails.

I've tested it on my server and it works. The email still lands in spam (because of content) but DKIM is a pass.

Share your "Exchange (Office365)" header maybe I can help.

Can you try this:

dkim_sign_headers = from:user-agent:message-id:to:date

Unfortunately did not work :-( Keep getting signature did not verify

Share your "Exchange (Office365)" header maybe I can help.
I don't have any office365 or exchange header not using exchange or office 365. As you could see from my test my systems don't have any issue. But thank you for offering the help!
And for the explanation about the changed header.

@richard. You can use the headers in Glockapp. So you're saying your Outlook (office 365) is not spam?

@RVandenbussche: Correct, that's what's I'm saying.
Mine was all green, gave 100% and specs said 98,6% inbox and 1,4% tabs.
Exchange (Office365) Inbox: 100.00%
Same for normal Outlook and anything else, except for (as said) Network solutions which used a wrong sender ip (can only be an error on their side) and @web.de which did not receive any mail.

And this is all without using these extra lines in dkim_sign_header. And I'm using the default exim.dkim.conf version 1.2.

If you want me to post the DKIM header from glockapps with office 365, just say so and I'll post it here.

So I did again some testing with adding the suggested line to exim.dkim.conf

dkim_sign_headers = from:user-agent:message-id:to:date

When I'll send mail from my server to Gmail account either the mail with the standard or entered exim.dkim.conf are DKIM passed.

Any one that can try to help me to solve this?
Now all my mails are still send to Junkmap by Microsoft.

EDIT:

When I send email throught webmail (Dovecot) then DKIM signature PASS !!!
So I think there is something wrong with EXIM when you send mail via SMTP account.
