Note: If you people plan upgrade MariaDB from 10.0/10.1 to 10.2 - first check your tables in databases, because if columns without default value don't have checked "null" you will be suprised if your website doesn't respect insert operations :) and you can't downgrade from 10.2 to 10.1/10.0 because then mysql is messed and mysql.sock disappear :D - I wrote that all because I had problems because of 10.2 and it took me an hour to get to it :D

I won't be surprised at all if a column is NOT NULL, does not have Default Value, I try to insert NULL to it and it fails. That completely makes sense and I consider it normal behaviour.
