Dovecot error on POP failure says it can't locate user account

80 users have no mail complaints. One user/domain simply can't make a POP connection. The Dovecot error logs say Dovecot cannot locate the user account to complete authentication.

Deleting and restoring the mailbox(s) in DirectAdmin changes nothing. Creating an entirely different mailbox on the same domain/user account also fails.

I hesitate to climb into the Dovecot configuration files for fear of a conflict with DirectAdmin.

Any suggestions?

I suggest you post log entries to help pinpoint the issue. Are they using the correct username and password for that account. Is it a main account or a virtual email account? Do you have that domain configured for external email or internal email?
