Who built your conversion to Dovecot?

I'd guess that someone did something wrong.

I know this thread is fairly old, but I just started experiencing this issue with Dovecot as well. How did you resolve it? I am receiving several "retry timeout exceeded" warnings as well. I am able to send and receive mail for the most part, it's very flaky however, and occassionally fails on certain aliases.

I fixed it by downloading the exim config file written for dovcot from the direcadmin repository. If you are using MailScanner you need to make relevant changes to the second exim config file accordingly.
