I am currently running

Linux naf-server01.com 2.6.9-22.0.2.ELsmp #1 SMP Tue Jan 17 07:10:04 CST 2006 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux

And was told to update to 2.6.15 to fix the problems with vbulletin and slow cpu.

I did a yum search kernel but all i see is the 2.6.9-22.0.2 kernel in the list.

If i do a yum install kernel will it just try and install that or does yum search show whats on my comptuer already installed?

Your server is already using the latest kernel available from RedHat.

RedHat doesn't update kernels with the same numbering schema as the official kernel tree.

What they do is backport fixes to their supported kernel, which stays the same through the OS maintenance cycle.

You're running the 22nd RedHat update to the 2.6.9 kernel.

You can of course install your own kernel; it's not easy to do, and you can end up with an unbootable machine.

So it's not my intention to teach you how to do it.

Perhaps you can find an RPM for the kernel you need, but I don't know where you'd look. Recently rpmfind.net has been so busy as to take fifteen minutes or more to do even the simplest search, but that would be a good place to start looking for unofficial kernels.
