Hi all,

Issue which I am coming across. smartd wont run on a new Dell PowerEdge system running CentOS 4.4 (updated)

Im getting the following error

smartd - Bad IEC (smart) mode err=-5

And it fails. Now im running 2 SAS (serial scsi) drives in raid 1(mirror) and I cant see why it wont run? Is there something I need to modify in my smartd.conf?

Definitely an Operating System Related Discussion.

the smartd daemon doesn't work for lots of new RAID controllers.

Take it up with whomever maintains it :) .

I have the same issue on a PE 4600. I don't really think that it's a big deal. I might just remove smartd.

I have exact problem on some of my servers, I simply disabled smartd as well. never notice any difference.

i remember smartd is just to monitoring of harddisk performance only. but what does it do when there is a harddisk failure? i don't know.

smartd can catch many hard-drive errors before they result in drive failures. It should work; it was last updated December 21, 2006. Latest information may be found here.
