Recommended forum software?

Not directly related to DA, but which free forum software would you guys recommend?

I know phpBB is often used but it also appears to be often and easily hacked.

I don't want supporting one client's requirements to bring the entire server down or something if they get hacked.

Yet at the same time I cannot use a totally bare minimum forum because they would expect to be able to skin/template, use smileys, forum codes and attachments.

Appreciate any suggestions while I dig around the web for more information.

Do you know of any forums that incorporate a mail list function? Not a simple "someone has responded" as we have here, but some that allows email to be sent to and from the forum?

I have a mailing list with a couple of hundred subscribers, and a companion forum....it would be interesting to "marry" the two, thus allowing the email prefers to get their posts via email and the web participants to get it that way?

Perhaps there is an application that does that?

I'm not aware of any, but that's not to say there isn't something out there that might do what you are looking to do.
