I first installed then updated spamassassin using spam.sh... then I installed the mailscanner, clamav combo as covered in these forums but I keep reading that spamassassin/spamd shouldn't be running with mailscanner or it causes problems.

So I stopped spamassassin:

/etc/rc.d/init.d/spamassassin stop

But then I start getting these in /var/log/maillog

Mar 16 15:21:29 server MailScanner[31513]: New Batch: Scanning 1 messages, 5324 bytes
Mar 16 15:21:29 server MailScanner[31513]: Virus and Content Scanning: Starting
Mar 16 15:21:30 server MailScanner[31513]: Uninfected: Delivered 1 messages
Mar 16 15:21:30 server spamc[1989]: connect(AF_INET) to spamd at 127.0.0.1 failed, retrying (#1 of 3): Connection refused
Mar 16 15:21:31 server spamc[1989]: connect(AF_INET) to spamd at 127.0.0.1 failed, retrying (#2 of 3): Connection refused
Mar 16 15:21:32 server spamc[1989]: connect(AF_INET) to spamd at 127.0.0.1 failed, retrying (#3 of 3): Connection refused
Mar 16 15:21:33 server spamc[1989]: connection attempt to spamd aborted after 3 retries

...so confused... should spamassassin be running in conjunction with mailscanner or not? If not.. what's with the spamc connection refused warnings?

I went back and reversed the changes to the exim.conf as specified in this post to setup spamassassin:

http://www.directadmin.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1193&highlight=spamassassin

Then edit the /etc/exim.conf (and exim_outgoing.conf because of the mailscanner install) and remove the # characters from in front of the spamcheck_director to make it look like:

code:--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
# Spam Assassin
spamcheck_director:
driver = accept
condition = "${if and { {!def:h_X-Spam-Flag:} {!eq {$received_protocol}{spam-scanned}} {!eq {$received_protocol}{local}} } {1}{0}}"
retry_use_local_part
transport = spamcheck
no_verify

by adding a # in front of spamcheck_director
#spamcheck_director

and since I commited the cardinal sin by not backing up exim.conf BEFORE making the changes I didn't have reference as to whether or not the rest of the code below it needed commenting out as well.

I then did a
# /etc/rc.d/init.d/spamassassin stop

and a

# service MailScanner restart

which restarted exim and mailscanner successfully.

I will watch the logs to see what happens next.

BAh.....

#tail /var/log/exim/paniclog

2004-03-16 16:05:06 Exim configuration error in line 388:
"driver" option set for the second time

# Spam Assassin
# spamcheck_director:
# driver = accept
# condition = "${if and { {!def:h_X-Spam-Flag:} {!eq {$received_protocol}{spam-scanned}} {!eq {$received_protocol}{local}} } {1}{0}}"
# retry_use_local_part
# transport = spamcheck
# no_verify

So as you can see above I commented out the whole section.. no more errors in the paniclog and I am receiving mail but nothing in the email headers about getting scanned by spamassassin either other than:

X-MailScanner-Information: Please contact the ISP for more information
X-MailScanner: Found to be clean
X-MailScanner-From: [email protected]

AND

I'm still not seeing anything in the rejectlog since 5am this morning after I installed the MailScanner/ClamAV combo as detailed here:

http://www.directadmin.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1187

I could use some enlightenment here.

Furthermore.. not to double post but I replied to the thread below as follows:

Ok... so I have killed spamd.. which is SpamAssassin and re-edited the exim.conf to put it back the way it should be for this install.

Did some reading about MailScanner and found this:

# Do you want to find spam using the "SpamAssassin" package?
# This can also be the filename of a ruleset.
Use SpamAssassin = yes

was set to =no but I changed to =yes then restarted MailScanner successfully.

but I am still not seeing any headers in the email with any type of scoring.. just that it's clean.. no viruses.

Ever since I killed SpamAssassin there are no emails with SA headers....

You sure about the installation instructions in this thread or am I missing something?

http://www.directadmin.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1187&perpage=20&pagenumber=1
(last page)

And although I'm not seeing any spam I'm not seeing and rbl rejections in the logs either.. using spamcop, ordb, spamhaus..etc.

I AM seeing this in /var/log/maillog:

Mar 17 11:58:22 server MailScanner[11113]: New Batch: Scanning 1 messages, 4500 bytes
Mar 17 11:58:23 server MailScanner[11113]: Virus and Content Scanning: Starting

Hello,

I'm not farmiliar with MailScanner, but you could probably just post a link to this thread from in the How-To for MailScanner/Exim.

John

Here ya go.. all 1487 lines of it:

# Main configuration file for the MailScanner E-Mail Virus Scanner
#
# It's good practice to check through configuration files to make sure
# they fit with your system and your needs, whatever you expect them to
# contain.
#
# Note: If your directories are symlinked (soft-linked) in any way,
# please put their *real* location in here, not a path that
# includes any links. You may get some very strange error
# messages from some of the virus scanners if you don't.
#
# Note for Version 4.00 and above:
# A lot of the settings can take a ruleset as well as just simple
# values. These rulesets are files containing rules which are applied
# to the current message to calculate the value of the configuration
# option. The rules are checked in the order they appear in the ruleset.
#
# Note for Version 4.03 and above:
# As well as rulesets, you can now include your own functions in
# here. Look at the directory containing Config.pm and you will find
# CustomConfig.pm. In here, you can add your own "value" function and
# an Initvalue function to set up any global state you need such as
# database connections. Then for a setting below, you can put:
# Configuration Option = &ValueFunction
# where "ValueFunction" is the name of the function you have
# written in CustomConfig.pm.

# When trying to work out the value of configuration parameters which are

# If this option is set to "yes", then the following happens when checking
# the ruleset:
# a) 1 recipient. Same behaviour as normal.
# b) Several recipients, but all in the same domain (domain.com for example).
# The rules are checked for one that matches the string "*@domain.com".
# c) Several recipients, not all in the same domain.

I want to follow up by saying that I don't really care that much about spamassassin but want ClamAV (which seems to be working ok) and the rbl's I have in Exim clearing the spam.

Nowhere can I find any evidence that the rbls are doing their thing.. nothing in the multitude of logs I can find.

Just as I thought ;)

1176 Always Include SpamAssassin Report = no

Should be yes if you want to see something

Well...whaddya know:

X-American_Intelligence-MailScanner-Information: Please contact the ISP for more information
X-American_Intelligence-MailScanner: Found to be clean
X-American_Intelligence-MailScanner-SpamCheck: not spam,
SpamAssassin (score=0.101, required 6, HTML_60_70 0.10, HTML_MESSAGE 0.00)

Might want to cover the SpamAssassin changes in the MS conf within your install instructions including:

# Do you want to find spam using the "SpamAssassin" package?
# This can also be the filename of a ruleset.
Use SpamAssassin = yes

Which is set to no by default.

Thanks for looking it over.

Now.. what about RBL's?

Make sure that spamd is off and that it won't start on reboot or you will run into problems.

Using RBLs directly in MailScanner.conf is very dangerous. Make sure you know exactly what they are doing before you even consider enabling them.

nod32

Hey guys,

I've installed nod32 as per the instructions provided from them, however when i start nod32d and restart exim with the changes, I receive the following error looping in my exim logs:

2005-08-25 12:48:26 1E85us-0003nM-Cm == [email protected] R=nod32 T=nod32_transport defer (0): Child process of nod32_transport transport returned 75 (could mean temporary error) from command: /usr/bin/nod32mda

The following changes were made to exim.conf:
begin routers

# ROUTER CONFIGURATION
nod32:
driver = accept
domains = +local_domains
condition = "${if eq {$received_protocol}{virus-scanned} {0}{1}}"
transport = nod32_transport
verify = false

begin transports

# TRANSPORTS CONFIGURATION
nod32_transport:
driver = pipe
command = /usr/bin/nod32mda $local_part@$domain
user = mailnull
group = mail

root@web:/usr/local/src# ls -al /usr/bin/nod32mda
-rwxr-xr-x 1 mailnull mail 13244 Apr 13 19:43 /usr/bin/nod32mda

following change was made to nod32.cfg"

root@web:/usr/local/src# cat /etc/nod32/nod32.cfg | grep deliver
mda_path = "/usr/local/sbin/deliver"

root@web:/usr/local/src# ls -al /usr/local/sbin/deliver
-rwxr-xr-x 1 mailnull mail 47 Aug 24 23:15 /usr/local/sbin/deliver

root@web:/usr/local/src# cat /usr/local/sbin/deliver
#!/bin/sh
/usr/sbin/exim -oMr virus-scanned $*

Please any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Barry

You shouldn't start nod. There is no reason for you to start it and that is probably why it is failing miserably

working

After hours of trying to get it to go, its now working, i just uncommented user & group. Nod32d does need to be running.

My problem now is everything works, but if i enable spamassassin mail just loops like before.
