In Logwatch, I see many like this

dovecot: auth: passwd([email protected],209.85.161.12): unknown user: 1 Time(s)
dovecot: auth: passwd([email protected],209.85.161.13): unknown user: 23 Time(s)
dovecot: auth: passwd([email protected],209.85.161.2): unknown user: 12 Time(s)
dovecot: auth: passwd([email protected],209.85.161.22): unknown user: 25 Time(s)
dovecot: auth: passwd([email protected],209.85.161.23): unknown user: 11 Time(s)
dovecot: auth: passwd([email protected],209.85.161.3): unknown user: 11 Time(s)
dovecot: auth: passwd([email protected],209.85.161.30): unknown user: 1 Time(s)
dovecot: auth: passwd([email protected],209.85.161.33): unknown user: 13 Time(s)
dovecot: auth: passwd([email protected],209.85.161.34): unknown user: 15 Time(s)
dovecot: auth: passwd([email protected],209.85.161.37): unknown user: 11 Time(s)
dovecot: auth: passwd([email protected],209.85.161.39): unknown user: 12 Time(s)
dovecot: auth: passwd([email protected],209.85.161.5): unknown user: 3 Time(s)
dovecot: auth: passwd([email protected],209.85.161.7): unknown user: 1 Time(s)

Checked and that [email protected] is existing. Wondering why Google IPs try to connect to that account, and why it shows "unknown user" there?

Thanks.

I have about the same thing going on, in my case the e-mail doesn't really exists but I talked about it with my customer and it seems someone just wrongly configured his pop3 account in gmail, so it keeps trying to login until it works, or until someone removes the account/fixes it I guess.

As for your unknown user, if it is user@domain, where user is the actual username for directadmin, you need to login with user alone without the @domain.

Thanks for replying. However, your cases are not mine. My questions are applying for Google IPs, not customer's IP. Also, user@domain is actual email account, not DA account.

Arieh is right. Someone (probably your customer that created the mailbox [email protected]) owns a Gmail box. In that account he configured to download the mail from his pop3 box on your server but filled in the wrong password. It happens on our servers too so nothing to worry. As a service you could inform your customer about his misconfigured Gmail account.

Thanks. I am checking about the gmail setting. How about the "unknown user" info. As said, that account is existed email account, and it's not a DA account.

Thanks.
