View Full Version : Dovecot and multiple accounts time out

A customer of ours uses Imap on 5 emailaccounts. What happens is that from time to time he gets connection timeouts and needs to login again.. We tested it from several locations and indeed we can reproduce it.
However another customer only checking 1 email account with imap on the same server never has this issue.
Since imap is hardly used and I never had to deal with before I'm a bit stuck on what could be the problem. I checked the dovecot conf file but not really clear on what I could adjust to solve this issue..

Why not check the dovecot log file?

I actually got a better error report from this customer..

Maximum number of connections from user+IP exceeded (mail_max_userip_connections=10)

I raised it in dovecot.conf to 100 and for now it seems the problem is solved..

Not sure why they need to connect that many times...their client is probably miss-configured.

They use multiple laptops I think and check all the 5 accounts.. The default of 10 is probably just not enough..
