Dovecot IMAP, Outlook 2013 and massive bandwidth peaks

Earlier this week a client IMAP account started burning up 6-8GB daily instead of its usual 60-70Mb. Turns out they were running Outlook 2013 which keeps continuously synchronising, downloading 50-250Mb throughout the day. I have since Googled a couple of posts identifying this synchronisation as an issue for Outlook 2013 and Dovecot. My first reaction is to tell clients to blame MS and Outlook 2013. But anyone aware of anything we can do at a server level to tackle this as I don't think it helps me to tell clients to junk their latest Outlook. I am running Dovecot 2.2.6

Doesnt seem like a problem. If they are paying you for the bandwidth let them use it for what they want. Charge them for overages if they go over.

Hello,

I got a problem like this...Yesterday I have sync and email account from Google Apps => Our server

After the sync I got this message:
This is an automated message notifying User ynntvvls that 8730613421% of his/her bandwidth and 37.0% of his/her allocated disk space has been used up.

It is estimated, at the current rate of use, that the account bandwidth will be used up in -26.00 days, at which time the account may be
suspended for t$

The User should contact Support if this is an issue.

But it's impossible that the sync have used 17592186044379.2 MB (16777215.999 TB !!!!!!!) of bandwith like DA said for a IMAP sync of 5 GB of disk space.... and no sign of 16777215.999 TB of transfert on the MRTG graph!!

I also use dovecot 2.2.6

Then you probably should check dovecot logs and report it as a bug in a proper sub-forum here.

This is a known bug in outlook 2013 (do google)
outlook 2007 & 2012 doesnt have this problem
