How many IP's?

I was looking through the demos and reading through site-helper and happened to notice that your ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com nameservers can not be assigned to an IP address that is owned by the server. Does this mean that I need 3 outside IP addresses on the server? 1 to be owned by the server and 2 more for the DNS Servers???

I originally thought that you could run your server with webhosting and DNS with only 2 outside IP's.

Which one is right?

Louie

You only need 2 ip addresses to run a dns server. Or 1 ip address for just webhosting but then you would have to use a 3rd party dns manager.

Dear All,

I got a similar question with louie.

Is that DA config the DNS in my server automatically?
If yes, I just provided 1 IP address to DA, but there are primary and secondary two name server available. how does it works? doesn't need 2 IP for those primary and secondart name servers?

Sorry all. I just find solution.
I think i'm really a stupid guy. Sorry :(

Ok, I finally got DA installed on my server, but the problem I described above is happening. I had to put 3 IP addresses in because the main server IP address says it's owned by the server. And site-helper.com says that you can't have a dns server address on a server owned address, what do I do to go to using only 2 IP's??? Please help. Thanks.

Are you sure?
Suppose the step is:
1) Go to reseller level
2) go to ip management
3) add ip as u have
4) go to name servers
5) tick any 2 ips, and then click create

if you still can't with the steps above, please let me know what's the problem as you faced.

did you assign the server ip to your admin account?
(tick the ip then click assign in "ip management")

No, it won't let me assign any reseller or admin to the server IP. I click "Assign" and it just comes back and looks the same as it always did. I'm about ready to give up and use 3 IP addresses (although I really don't want to). I've added and removed and added and removed and removed some more then added so many things in so many places I probably have the whole DNS system corrupted. :( (Not to mention I can't test any of it because I'm awaiting a domain transfer) I just can't get it to add a nameserver on the server IP.

Well, I kind of did using some sort of bug I found, but it still didn't work. I found out if you just select 1 IP address (even the server IP) and then try to add 2 nameservers, it will put the nameserver name by the IP address, but ns2 will still not be assigned. But I'm pretty sure this is a bug and is not the solution to my problem. I was getting weird DNS entries so I undid all of this.

Anyway, can anybody give a detailed instuctions how to setup nameservers on only 2 IP's??? I've seen a lot of howto's on how to install DA, but nothing to tell you what to do after that. site-helper.com doesn't help because their examples are using more than 2 IP addresses. If I ever get this working, I might just write a howto :) Please help!!!

Louie

Yes, I have read those instructions before and they say to add 2 more IP addresses to the server. To me that means 2 more besides the server IP because after I installed DA, the server IP was already there, I didn't have to add it. Also, could my problem have been caused by adding a reseller too soon? Because I added the reseller almost first thing without setting every admin level setting. I don't know if that could have made a difference?? All I know is that site-helper.com says that you cannot put a nameserver on a server owned IP AND when I try to do it in DA it also tells me that you can't do this, yet you and other people on this forum are telling me that it CAN be done???????????????? So which is it??? I need to know ASAP. Thanks.

Ok, here's something interesting. I used a DNS Check tool at http://www.ip-plus.net/tools/dns_check_set.en.html and queried my server about my current resellers domain and this is the output I got.

Some info first. My "server IP" is .59 and .60 is the address I am trying to use for my second nameserver. I have replaced "mydomain.com" for my real domain and have added 999.999 in place of my real IP numbers. According to this output, doesn't it look like my nameservers are setup right??? I am not a DNS expert, so I'm not sure how to interpret this. But if they are setup right, then why is everything all messed up in DA??? Here's the output:
