Hello,

On one of our dedicated server we see a lot of pids of httpd.
httpd (pid 18887 18879 18834 18830 18816 18815 18814 18813 18810 18809 18808 18753 18386 18380 18377 18376 18375 18358 18357 18347 18335 18334 18333 18332 18331 18330 18329 18328 18322 18320 18319 18318 18315 18314 18308 18302 18301 18300 18299 18298 18297 18296 18295 18287) is running...

And a couple minutes later I see this:
httpd (pid 19108 19088 19087 19078 19071 18968 18834 18830 18816 18815 18814 18813 18810 18809 18808 18753 18386 18380 18377 18376 18375 18358 18357 18347 18335 18334 18333 18332 18331 18330 18329 18328 18322 18320 18319 18318 18315 18314 18308 18302 18301 18300 18299 18298 18297 18296 18295 18287) is running...

This can't be good. I try to reinstall apache with the script
in directadmin. But the problem exist? Does anyone have a
solution for this?

Thank you,

Rolf

An id is requeired for each request that apache recieves and must handle. It is normal to have quite a few of those. The best way to judge if it is a problem is server performance, cpu usage, etc.
You can always decrease the number of threads and connections apache allows in the httpd.conf file :)

Any chance you can post some recommendations for finetuning apache under the current configuration that DA install imposes.

After upgrading about a week or so ago the two machines running DA have gone down about 4 times a day. Each time the processes are going wild. Like this from 10 minutes ago.

10198 10195 10194 10193 10192 10189 10187 10186 10184 10178 10171 10170 10169 10168 10165 10164 10161 10154 10153 10152 10151 10149 10148 10146 10062 10057 10049 10025 10024 10023 10022 10020 10019 10018 10017 10011 10008 10007 10006 10001 10000 9997 9983 9982 9981 9980 9979 9978 9977 9976 9975 9974 9973 9972 9970 9969 9968 9956 9955 9954 9947 9922 9921 9919 9895 9894 9893 9878 9877 9875 9870 9869 9868 9867 9866 9865 9863 9860 9859 9858 9853 9852 9847 9845 9844 9842 9831 9830 9829 9828 9825 9824

I was told DA could handle like 500 domains on a server. These have about 10, 4 of which are Miva Merchant storefronts. Yet my manually installed machines on the same network have about 300 domains 40 of which are Miva Merchant storefronts.

The DA machines are Dual Xeons with 1GB of RAM. The other machines are single P4s with 512MB or RAM that are due for upgrading.

It just plain don't add up. There is a nasty problem with CPU and RAM usage. Something is gobbling it up.

Does the new DA setup any throttling or modbandwidth by default. If so where are the config files. If some sort of throttling is enabled I would suspect that it is keeping these processes from closing in a timely manner.

FYI: OS is FreeBSD 4.10
