Backup to Google-drive? FUSE?

Since DreamHost is a competitor to many of us in the hosting business I've disabled the link; no need to give them credibility to compete aginst us through Google liking the link :).

Where did you find the Plan of 1 TB for only $19.95/month? I'm interested :).

Have you tried them? I'm curious about several things:

In their TOS it says there's a $49.95 setup fee for shared hosting. Do they consider this shared hosting?

Does the space workl with standard FTP commands? Or only their S3-compatible API?

np. Here is a review of and a reply from DH: http://www.acmedata.in/tag/dreamobjects-review/

Don't know about setup fee? Haven't tried them. They state that their target is "personal backup", so? dunno. Sounds a Little Fishy to Me. The price is ok though.

I'm thinking of rebuilding my topolgy, so I'm rethinking everything. I don't know per se what or how I'm going to do it, but I want to make things more simple according to backup. I want to be able to make live snapshots of my KVMs, so I've looked different solutions like Proxmox, RedHat OpenStack, etc, but I'm unsure right now. I've also rediscovered some interesting backup tools, which I'm just reading up on, they are: Tartarus Backup (http://wertarbyte.de/tartarus.shtml), backup2l, and Duplicity (http://duplicity.nongnu.org).

The following is from Duplicity's homepage:
"In theory many protocols for connecting to a file server could be supported; so far ssh/scp, local file access, rsync, ftp, HSI, WebDAV, Tahoe-LAFS, and Amazon S3 have been written. Currently duplicity supports deleted files, full unix permissions, directories, and symbolic links, fifos, and device files, but not hard links."

I furthermore have an opportunity to buy more local storage in the center, so I do not really have to go out to the cloud. I will still use S3 for the small stuff, CDN, WP, Nodes, etc. Maybe I will just buy some more storage in the center. 500GB for around 8.5 euro and 2TB for around 16 euro, plus tax. I can access the storage via FTP, so I will look into those tools I mentioned. Local backup it's also much faster, and cheaper, since it's only storage, no need to pay for bandwidth.

Buuut, I will still search around the web to find cheap and reliable storage, hence this thread :)

As poster in your link points out, their TOS says no backups, but the reply (unofficial unless the company gives it to you in writing, and unless the person who does has the authority to give it to you in writing) says you can use it for backups. I've decided I'm not interested.

I alrady have on-site backups, plenty of space, and unlimited growth, since my own reorganizaiton during the last year. I believe I should have off-site backups as well, for more security and peace of mind.

On the other subject you mentioned, I'm probably not as experienced with VMs as you are, but my Proxmox tests were spectarularly unsuccessful and I moved on to Virtualizor, which works well for me, as does their support. Yes, it costs a few dollars a month, but for me it's worth it.

Thanks for your reply.

Thx jeff

I'm not interested in that specific product either.

Virtualizor looks promising, and provides everything necessary. Seems like a nice product. I too have to bridge the nics and run a separate firewall, before the VMs. Looks cool that interface, might try it on my next build, probable when I move on to CentoOS 7. Those few bucks are easily earned back, since you can deploy quickly via the admin interface. I had to install a bunch of stuff myself, like fail2ban and Shorewall, to protect my VMs. Looks like Virtualizor have everything included under the hood.

Thank you Jeff.

Jeff,

I'm just looking at docker.com - do you have any experience with Docker? This is somewhat related to the previous posts, but I'm actually reading up on it because of "discourse_docker" which I would like to test. It's for a future project. I can think of a few scenarios in which it can be utilized.

gdrive or drive for Google Drive?

Any ideas for Google-drive? Preferably with a link that can actually be opened. No offense @Cuongdz92.
I was planning to use the drive that is the closest to the official api since a Google Engineer coded this in her free time.

But there is also an another option gdrive but it is not actively maintained. So I need your helps to decide. What should I choose?
