Upgrade from Ubuntu 14.04 LTS to 16.04 LTS

    Hello,

I've been using Directadmin succesfully on Ubuntu Server 14.04 LTS for the past few years.
This version of Ubuntu will be out of support in Q1 2019, so I will have to upgrade the software.

I saw Ubuntu 18.04 LTS is based on Debian 10 which isn't supported yet, so I decided to go for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. That's still supported to 2021, so thats's fine.

What are the things I have to look out for? Can I safely update Ubuntu to 16.04 and what kind of actions should I perform with Directadmin afterwards? Or should I take some action before updating Ubuntu (other then creating a snapshot for safety)?

    Hello,

    They say here https://directadmin.com/install.html

Ubuntu 16.04 and up uses Debian 9 BUT requires Debian 8 DA binaries due to old libssl.so.1.0.0

So I believe you don't need to change OS version on your license; just complete running pre-install commands for your OS from here https://help.directadmin.com/item.php?id=354 and rebuild everything with Custombuild afterwards.

Sorry for the late reply, thanks for answering.

I tried to upgrade two times now but had to revert to a snapshot both times. MySQL won't work and throws fatal errors after upgrading. Also some other software like Nginx won't start.
I'm afraid the only option is to spin up a completely new server, a lot more work.

I ended up with almost all services refusing to start, so I think it's 'back to the drawing board' for now
