So I know this has been covered countless of times.

As far as stability and security is concerned:

Should I be going for Release ? Or Stable ? Branches of FreeBSD.

Also if Im runing 5.x Stable then shouldnt uname -a say Stable ?

FreeBSD xxx.xxx.net 5.4-RELEASE FreeBSD 5.4-RELEASE #0: Sun May 8 10:21:06 UTC 2005 [email protected]:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC i386

Or is 5.4 Release == to Stable

Is 5.4 Stable even available yet ?

(Forgive the confusin its been a while)

There is another branch you havent mentioned which I think should be used on web server production boxes.

5.4 Release - Default on 5.4 installations.
5.4 Security branch - Release with critical fixes and security patches. - I reccomend this branch - Uname looks like this 5.4-RELEASE-p6
5.4 STABLE - The latest tested code, but more risky then the above branch since it is not been tested for release quality. - Uname looks like this 5.4-STABLE

The STABLE branch isnt bound to a release so when 5.4 got released 5.3-STABLE becomes 5.4-STABLE so as such 5.4-RELEASE is newer code then 5.3-STABLE.

Thanks for the tip. I did see somethin bout a security branch, but didnt think much of it. Now that youve highlighted it for me however looks like Ill give it a go.
