Hi All

Hope that someone can give me some feedback on below

We are using for so many years server.example.com or something like this for our hostname and rDNS, (ofcourse with our own domain)
We never had any problems till cloudmark banned our ip last weekend with the outcoming results below

Please could you update the rDNS on this IP to be something more specific to the sender and/or your organisation rather than the generic pattern that the provider has assigned by default. You may need to contact your provider in order to accomplish this rDNS change. Continuing to send mail from an IP with a generic rDNS pattern is likely to affect your Cloudmark reputation score in the future as well as your reputation with many ISPs and DNSbls.

For instance mail.example.com would be considered far less generic than 208-83-136-1.sfo.example.com or hosted-by.example.com

Ok

So we can change our rDNS

but we dont want to change our hostname from this server, as we need to inform clients to change the hostname in there email settings as well

Is it possible to change the HELO from our server only or add a nother one which is the same as our new rDNS without chaging the servers hostname? and is this a valid way?

Example
  • HELO: otb1.mail.example.com
  • rDNS: otb1.mail.example.com
or should we use an extra IP like this post

Logical.
But why isn't server.hostdomain.com then considered less generic?

If you use the default setup, then the helo/ehlo would be also server.hostdomain.com and then the rDNS should point to server.example.com ofcourse and not to something like hosted-by.example.com or such.
So if you're not pointing to your real hostname like server.hostdomain.com then the only thing you should have to do is point the rDNS to your correct hostname.

If you're not using one like this yet, then indeed it's better to change it.
As for the customers, why only use your hostname? Customers are able (in a default setting) to use mail.theirdomain.com instread of server.hostdomain.com as smtp server.
