When i use WinZip to extract a compressed file that has a .zip file name extension on a Windows Vista-based computer, I receive an error message that resembles the following:
This file was compressed using an unknown compression method. Please visit www.winzip.com/wz54.htm for more information. The compression method used for this file is 98. error: no files were found - nothing to do

Hello,

That's an offtopic for these forums, so the thread was moved.

Regards,
Alex.

This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:
You can try to extract a compressed file that was created by using WinZip 10.
The computer on which you try to extract the file has an earlier version of WinZip installed.
WinZip 10 uses a compression method that is incompatible with some versions of Windows and with earlier versions of WinZip.
For more information about this error message, visit the following WinZip Web site: https://www.fixtoolbox.com/zipfix.html Zip Fix Toolbox

Or follow these steps in WinZip 10:
Click File, and then click New Archive.
In the File name box, type the name that you want to use for the compressed file, and then press OK.
In the Add dialog box, select the files you want to add to the archive.
In the Compression box, select Maximum (portable), and then click Add.

This error can happen when part of the zip file becomes corrupt during an interrupted download, copy or move.

If this error happens due to Internet connection problems (for example, noise on a phone line) then the problem can most easily be solved by discarding the damaged file and downloading a new copy.
However, if you are not able to replace the corrupt Zip file, Zip Fix Toolbox should fix the problem. Download it here: https://www.fixtoolbox.com/zipfix.html
