Hi.

I apologize already for it, if this topic is not in the correct thread in this board or doesnt belong to here, but i hope, that someone has a tip/solution for me, which can solve the problem.

I recommended a smaller client from me to a new hosting company. There he is on a shared hosting package with Cpanel and uses SpamExperts as Spam filter. He is using his business domain also for his office email (via IMAP).

The hosting is absolutely okay for him, but after some days he told me, that every few days, some customers complain to him by answering on his emails, that they get a "550-Please turn on SMTP Authentication in your mail client" error message. Altough authentication is turned on in the mail software and nothing had been changed to the days before, where it had been functioning without any problems.

The error message is always like:
A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its
recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed:

[email protected]
host lt2.eu.cpanel.hostens.cloud [62.77.153.110]
SMTP error from remote mail server after RCPT TO:<[email protected]>:
550-Please turn on SMTP Authentication in your mail client. mx1a.serveriai.lt
550-[79.98.24.211]:47606 is not permitted to relay through this server without
550 authentication.
Reporting-MTA: dns; mx1a.serveriai.lt

Action: failed
Final-Recipient: rfc822;[email protected]
Status: 5.0.0
Remote-MTA: dns; lt2.eu.cpanel.hostens.cloud
Diagnostic-Code: smtp; 550-Please turn on SMTP Authentication in your mail client. mx1a.serveriai.lt
550-[79.98.24.211]:47606 is not permitted to relay through this server without
550 authentication.

If i look into "Track Delivery" then i see by that email as event "This message was rejected at SMTP time by an RBL, filter, or other configuration." And as result it shows me "Rejected relay attempt: 'XX.XX.XX.XX' From: '[email protected]' To: '[email protected]'"

Then the problem occurs for a while and a hour or 2 3 hours later, my client can receive emails like normal.

The hosting company told me, i should whitelist in the spam filter that mentioned sender domains - this i have been doing, but the problem is still showing up.

The hosting company told me now that the relay server is now disabled - whatever it is meaning. No idea if its only disabled for at moment or forever. At moment i have to observe, if the problems are coming back.

The hosting company also has been writing to me:
Then relay is enabled on the server when IP address is blacklisted somewhere. We have abuse team that monitors all the servers and if they see that our hosting packages are used for spamming or mass making, we opened the abuse tickets. However, the servers are shared, so it might be that IP address will be blacklisted somewhere, so when it happens, we enable on the server a relay until the IP address will be delisted.

They also mentioned it could have to do something with the filter - but i am not sure, because all the domains which are getting from time 2 time this 550 error message, are already whitelisted in the spam filter.

So my question: Has someone of you already experienced this kind of problems and has a tip, what i can tell them, that they should change or look onto, that i can solve this drama? Its really frustrating, because my client is already annoyed from it and i also would be happy, to know this problem fixed.

Greets

First of all, if he's indeed on cPanel, he should get help on their forums.

Having that said, it looks likes this message says all.
It looks like he is sending via serveriai.lt probably using port 25 or something like that, without smpt authentication. Or he is sending via his own provider using a method without authentication.

Seems to me the problem is in the customers SMTP settings, or when they use an external spamfilter, maybe because it's routed via there.

Anyway, seems this is not Directadmin so seems you're asking on the wrong forums. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
