If I'm to setup a server for web + mail + mysql + php + etc...
Should I install CentOS x64 version or i386 version? Which is better?
What I'm looking for is performance + stability + compatibility...

I know that i386 version must provide better compatibility, but x64 version provides higher performance, how should I choose?
My server has the following configurations:

- Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 (1.86GHz) CPU/2MB BOX
- GIGABYTE GA-965G-DS3 I965G M/B
- Super Talent DDR-2 667MHZ 1G Ram
- Seagate 250GB ST3250624NS NL35 SATA II/16MB
- Seagate 320GB ST3320620AS SATA II/16MB HDD
- LITEON 16X DVD Rom Drive
- SPI 400W ATX400PN ATX 20+4Pin Power Supply

Thanks for any advice! :)

But is it true that Frontpage Extension and Zend does not work on 64-bit platform? These are essential elements. Any ideas?

no, they work fine.

You managed to get Frontpage Server Extension and Zend to install and run properly in 64-bit OS? Can you please give me the details??? Thanks! ;)

If you want performance then those SATA drives should be SCSI. Try an AMD Dual Operton. It will outperform the Intel by far. But if what you have above is the best that you can get, then that will work too but not as well as SCSI drives as the drive speeds will always be your bottleneck.

Thanks for your comments. So would you suggest to use 32-bit or 64-bit platform? Will that make a huge difference?

Pucky, I believe that's an unsupportable opinion. If you disagree, then show me references.

Thanks.

Hi Jeff,

What's your suggestion for me? I heard that Frontpage Server Extension is not supported in 64-bit platform, and Zend gets poor support on it too, is this true? These are in fact key features that we want to provide to our customers. What do you think?

Anthony.

Not sure about the Zend and frontpage but I think I would hit a larger forum to be able to have an audience of more people using a 64bit platform. Head over to WHT and ask there, I don't think many people use the 64bit platform here. I will say though if all that you need to run will work 64bit then do it.

As for the hardware that is a pretty good box. The Conroe core chips run quite nicely though I would still go for an AMD chip (Opt 180-185) over a 6300. Step up to the 6600 or 6700 and things change if you match it with some DDR2 800 memory. You should see if you can use DDR2 800 memory.

SCSI vs SATA is an old debate, SCSI can be better depending on the type and the drive specs. But if you compare apples to apples things change. Not to mention if you use the Raptor drives especially in a RAID things really get hard to tell any difference.

Nice comments there~ ;) Thanks.

I personally don't use Frontpage, but it doesn't have any error what so ever during the installation so I suppose it works fine, zend surely works fine, it has 64bit version.
we have 20+ servers from opterons to woodcrests all running 64bit CentOS 4.x with DA. all perform very well.

Hi Jack!

Actually, I got a message from DA support John that Frontpage Server Extension is not supported in 64-bit environment! Can you confirm if you really got 64-bit OS running Frontpage? Do you mean installing 32-bit Frontpage Extension in 64-bit OS? If you got it working, it'll be a great move for us! Thanks!

Anthony.

This is quite ironic, but, I'm reformating my server back to 32-bit as we speak.

If you're ONLY doing web hosting, go with 64-bit. You _MAY_ see a slight performance improvement. If you'll be using your server for more things, go with 32-bit.

In my case, I was planning to running a few gaming servers. The company which the game was from stopped supporting 64-bit.
I wanted to run vmware on 64-bit, it just crashed and burned.
I wanted to install sftp restriction tools, they didn't like 64-bit.
I wanted to install SSH2-Libs, it refuses to install on 64-bit.

Take your choice wisely. I'm not sure if I'll take 64-bit in my future servers.

If John says it doesn't work then it doesn't work, I'm not sure about 32-bit Frontpage Extension in 64-bit OS, maybe you can ask John to confirm that? Sorry about the misleading information, my clients never use Frontpage so I don't know about this. I benchmark performance on 32bit and 64bit CentOS by unixbench, the scores shows using 64bit CentOS getting a lot of performance improvement, around 30%, and MySQL seems perform much better in 64bit CentOS. that's why I use 64bit CentOS.

Jack, thanks for your suggestions anyway~ :)

It's doubtful that FP will ever work with 64-bit as support for it has been dropped by Microsoft some time ago.
