Please bare with me as I'm sort of a linux newbie .. I'll try and explain myself as best as possible.

I'm currently using Plesk on my server and I hate it. Anytime I manually edit (via ssh) anything to do with apache (ie configs), either Plesk crashes, doesn't accept the changes due to it wasn't done via plesk control panel, or I keep getting that "sitebuilder" homepage on all my domains.

Plesk intergrates itself so much in to everything on the server, pretty much manually editing anything (apache, php, mysql) will have "some effect" and give me grief .. and I've had enough. I can't even update the CP as everytime I do, I get some licencing error and have to pay my webhost $75/hr to fix it. I'm still stuck on v8.0.0.

With Direct Admin installed on a server, does everything have to be done via the control panel? If I start manually editing configs or creating SQL databases, etc, will this Control Panel reconize the changes and run as per normal? or does it have to be done in the CP for everything to work properly? I'm planning to use FreeBSD 6.x on the server.

Does Direct Admin intergrate itself like Plesk does on the server?

Any info on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Ken

Hi,

DirectAdmin does not integrate like Plesk.

If you follow some rules when creating databases and editing crucial files DA will recognize them without a problem. Of course if you make a mistake while editing the files the application may not start up but that has nothing to do with DirectAdmin.

We build plugins that manipulate several files that DirectAdmin and the services is used use and we've not had problems as yet with DirectAdmin causing problems with the files we've changed.

Are these DA rules? If so, is there any docs on what they are?

Thanks,

Ken

Most rules are common sense but some are DA specific...

I don't believe that DA has a list but one would be that a database name is made up like this <username>_<databasename> where <username> is the DA username.

You'll have to look or ask on the forum if you have a problem.

Mayhem,

I was a Plesk gold partner, but I've been much happier since I found DirectAdmin.
