A lot of pids of httpd

On one of our dedicated server we see a lot of pids of httpd.
httpd (pid 18887 18879 18834 18830 18816 18815 18814 18813 18810 18809 18808 18753 18386 18380 18377 18376 18375 18358 18357 18347 18335 18334 18333 18332 18331 18330 18329 18328 18322 18320 18319 18318 18315 18314 18308 18302 18301 18300 18299 18298 18297 18296 18295 18287) is running...

And a couple minutes later I see this:

This can't be good. I try to reinstall apache with the script
in directadmin. But the problem exist? Does anyone have a
solution for this?

An id is requeired for each request that apache recieves and must handle. It is normal to have quite a few of those. The best way to judge if it is a problem is server performance, cpu usage, etc.
You can always decrease the number of threads and connections apache allows in the httpd.conf file

Any chance you can post some recommendations for finetuning apache under the current configuration that DA install imposes.

After upgrading about a week or so ago the two machines running DA have gone down about 4 times a day. Each time the processes are going wild. Like this from 10 minutes ago.

I was told DA could handle like 500 domains on a server. These have about 10, 4 of which are Miva Merchant storefronts. Yet my manually installed machines on the same network have about 300 domains 40 of which are Miva Merchant storefronts.

The DA machines are Dual Xeons with 1GB of RAM. The other machines are single P4s with 512MB or RAM that are due for upgrading.

It just plain don't add up. There is a nasty problem with CPU and RAM usage. Something is gobbling it up.

Does the new DA setup any throttling or modbandwidth by default. If so where are the config files. If some sort of throttling is enabled I would suspect that it is keeping these processes from closing in a timely manner.

FYI: OS is FreeBSD 4.10
