abandonded email account

Is there any way to find out if an email account has been abandonded? Perhaps checking when mail was last checked... I have no idea how to do this. I want to prune old email addresses. Just found one, talked with the owner, and he says it hasn't been check in over 6 years. I started poking around, and found a few more I suspect to be very old. One is from somebody I don't want to contact. If it hasn't been check in 6 months I'll just delete it.
