Hi,

This is my current situation. I have two directadmin servers, one is a main server, running ns1. The other is a back up server, running ns2. I'm currently using multi-server to mirror the dns records for ns1 onto the ns2 server. I hope this is correct.

Now, i want to use admin backup/restore to do a weekly back onto the ns2 server. However, i'm not able to restore the backup on the ns2 server as there are already DNS records of it in the server. Is there a way where i can restore the backups?

Are you saying you can't restore a site because the DNS already exists. Perhaps I'm missing something but it really doesn't make sense to me :(.

Perhaps DirectAdmin staff can shed some light on this issue.

Yep, thats why i am saying.

I used the multiserver setup to have another DA server to act as the secondary dns server. However, i also want this same server as a backup server. When I do a restore a backup on this backup server, i get an error saying that the dns is already exists, and i cannot do a proper restore.

Hello,

The problem with that logic is that the zones on the "restore" box (B) would try and be set to the B's server's IPs, while the main server (A) has it's zone mirrored on B.

If you were to actually "restore" an A backup onto B server, then B's IPs would be used, which contradicts the IPs in the A's multiserver setup. It's basically the point of the "domain already exists" error.

If you want your backups to be ready, then just use B as files backup server of the user tar.gz files, and only restore if A dies (remove zones first)

Why not make an option for the admin to decide if he wishes to override the current dns records?

That will throw it out of sync.. ns1 would be IPs from A, but ns2 would returned IPs from B. If you restore the dns records into B, then the IPs are all going to be set for server B, since all local data, like apache configs are set for server B IPs as well. Also if server A dies and you actually need to use the data on B, (assuming you get A ips in the zone) the IPs would all be pointing to the wrong server (A).

If there is a lot of demand for a raw override of the dns zones so that DA just blindly copies the db file with no IPs swaps, let me know and I can look into it, but it wouldn't work in it's current state for the above reasons.
