This is a feature request:

I love DirectAdmin, and so does my clients. However my clients don't like the "File Manager" in DirectAdmin so much. Please consider to integrate AjaXplorer in DirectAdmin instead. Read more about it here http://ajaxplorer.info Here is demo: http://demo.ajaxplorer.info

It is open source under the Affero GPL License. I am considering to install it in DirectAdmin my self, but it would be much better if DirectAdmin could offer this as default. If not I would have to offer both, because the password protection in DirectAdmin is using the default "File Manager".

Edit: One example of a big shared webhosting provider that is using AjaXplorer is DreamHost: https://webftp.dreamhost.com

If I wanted to use a plugin for it, then I would not post this feature request. Are you able to understand that?

Though I'm not a choice maker, but as far as I can see it, directadmin has never integrated or added a 3rd party solution into the CP. So why do you think should they do it now?

And the other moment is Affero GPL License which would not allow to integrate the open-source software into Directadmin (which is as we all know is not open-sourced). Or do I miss something?

Just request feature changes to the current one that you dont like. I would never want to see some poorly made 3rd party software like that added in.

I don't see why a file manager shuld be any different then phpMyAdmin and Roundcube webmail, for example. They are all 3rd party solutions. Why not do the same thing with the file manager? That is only my opinion, of course.

I am not sure about this. But my understanding is that they can link to it, but maybe not so much integrate it. How else would DreamHost be allowed to use it into their custom control panel (https://webftp.dreamhost.com/). Also I don't think it would need to be integrated any more then a link to it, like phpMyAdmin is linked to from DirectAdmin. The only challenge then would be what to do about the current solution for password protection wich in DirectAdmin is using the file manager.

This is what I found in the faq at: http://ajaxplorer.info/community/faq/

"Can I use AjaXplorer freely on my website, even if I’m a company

As long as you do not modify AjaXplorer deeply (modifications like theming or little tweaks are not taken into account), and as long as you leave a link to the source code (i.e. to this website, except if you want to host the source code on your own website) on the user-interface (this is the particularity of AGPL against GPL), yes you can.
For example, if you change the logo of the splashscreen (using the gui.ajax plugin options) and let the « Powered by AjaXplorer » mention, this will be ok. If you want to remove this reference, you should contact us.

Can I use AjaXplorer to offer a commercial service, like a cloud storage service?

Under the very strict AGPL conditions as explained above (leaving the source code link), yes, you can. But beware that this means that you must publish every modification you make to the code, and as the license is « copyleft », you will probably also have to publish the rest of your administration panel under a compatible license if ajaxplorer is integrated with it. So you’d probably want to contact us and buy a specific commercial friendly license.

Can I modify and/or integrate AjaXplorer inside my open-source software?

As long as your software license is compatible with the AGPL, and that the modifications are published, and that you leave the link on the user interface, YES.

Can I integrate AjaXplorer inside my commercial software?

If you software license is not open-source or not compatible with AGPL, NO, you can’t. But you can contact me and we can discuss an alternative licensing model that would allow you to do so."

Now I see what you mean. My first understanding was that you suggested that built-in FileManager would be replaced with AjaXplorer.
If so, I don't see anything that would keep you away from starting using of it now. Why do you hesitate then?

I hesitate mostly because the existing function in DirectAdmin to password protect a directory, wich uses DirectAdmin own File manager. Other then that, the main reason for the feature request is that I would like it to be in custombuild and to be supported the same way as phpMyAdmin and Roundcube webmail.

But, I am going to test AjaXplorer on one of my servers. If I am happy with the result, I will manually remove the link to DirectAdmin own file manager and replace it with link to AjaXplorer - but of course keep DirectAdmin own File manager for the password protection functionality.

A bit off-topic this.... but.... Why cant people just use FTP. Much easier and faster. Granted, FTP needs knowledge but.

These days people use CMS's instead of coding like a real designer (flame away), which takes away the technical knowledge that's required, eg. security, php, etc. So sad.

"It's useful to understand what's going on behind the scenes than take them for granted"

Some of my customers like to use a file manager/webftp to zip and unzip files, so that they don't have to upload/download thousands of files to/from their home computer - it's much faster for them if they can upload/download only one .zip file instead - and here is the problem - my clients find it hard to understand/learn how to zip and unzip files in DirectAdmin own file manager.

Therefor I am looking for other more user friendly alternatives to DirectAdmin own file manager, and AjaXplorer seems to be very user friendly and perfect for this.

I'm a seasoned admin and I've used FTP probably since before some users here were born. And I use SCP, and I use direct editing on the server with several editors. But the File Manager still has it's place and, for example, I use the admin-level file manager when I need to make a quick change to one of the exim blocklists. Everyone should use what they find works best for them.
