All .php files in public_html were changed to .gz files ?!

Very weird; all .php files in a public_html directory were changed to .gz files. The timestamp was not changed.

I am not able to find anything in logfiles about it.

Could this be the DA backup that somehow failed ? That was the only explanation I could find....

DirectAdmin backup system doesn't change anything in place in public_html.

Look for a server hack.
