Hello I am wondering if anyone can help me,
I am a hosting reseller, I use esecuresite3 server.
All the websites I host are down and I have not had a reply from support yet.
My clients are starting to phone me, they can't even retrieve emails. One of my websites is www.mischart.com, what could be the problem and I will have to change hosting company if this continues, can anyone recommend what I should do, especially to get the emails retrieved from all websites.

they are back

Yes it seems to have been fixed, but I am a bit worried, as it was more than 12 hours offline, is this a normal occurence with all web hosting companies or can there be a guarrantee that it will never happen. It creates panic especially if it is not within the resellers control. Is their a way or making a backup plan when it does happen?

I guess that depends on your definition of 'normal', but I guess no, it isn't normal. However, noone can guarantee 100% uptime.
Do you know what caused the downtime? Because there are many possibilities. It could be a hardware failure, networking problems, power failure etc. etc. It could even be a scheduled downtime for maintanance or something, although most providers will inform you before the downtime and those are usually scheduled at night, preferably during weekends. And they don't usually last 12 hours.
12 hours does seem a bit long, but without knowing the cause of the downtime I can't really say anything to that.
As for backup, sure there are many ways you can attempt to prevent or minimize downtime in case of some failure. You could install a raid system for harddisk problems, or setup 2 mirror servers (preferably on different locations), have multiple dns servers (also on different locations) etc. etc. The options are numerous. But they all cost money and become more difficult to manage as complexity increases. So it is really up to you how much redundancy you need in your situation.

12 hours?? I'd be headed to the Datacenter to pick up the drives so I could move the data to another facility in less time than that (if there wasn't a reasonable explanation).

RUN - far away if they dont offer a valid explanation - and FAST.

But that's just it, we don't know what caused the downtime. But you're right, if it happens frequently, or if the provider claims this is 'normal' than I would also be looking for a different provider asap.

thank you for the replies, yes I am considering changing server, any advice on which one would be good, I am in Europe, not that it matters I suppose, the server I use now I think is located in the States. It would be good to have telephone support, but they only offer email support.

Is it normal? The only thing I can say is that it does happen. But your hosting company needs to be very forthright as to why it happened.

Lots of companies have reseller accounts available in both Europe and in the U.S. But location may or may not be important; U.S. companies, for example, may give you longer latency to your customers' European visitors, but better (shorter) latency for your customers' U.S. visitors.

For some reason we haven't figured out, our Russian based clients seem to find and sign up with our U.S. based company, but not with our European based company, though you'd think they'd be looking first at Europe.

I strongly suggest you sign up with a company only after you've talked to the people on the phone; that way you have a feeling for how easy it is to contact them if they have a problem. Remember that if they're a small company or a reseller, then they can't get their email or their tickets if their system is down.

Jeff
