just curious what if i change my domain's dedicated IP address, will there be any down time? the site is still hosted at the same server.

i guess:

if the site is still hosted at the same server, there will be no downtime.

if the site not hosted another server, then it may be accessable due to DNS propagation? (even if the site and DNS record at old server were not deleted)

just my guess.

Any change of IP#s necessitates a change in DNS and can result in downtime, depending on both the TTLs in your zone files (ours are set for 600 seconds; you're are probably much higher), and whether or not the viewer of the site uses an ISP that honors TTLs (some don't).

If you're changing the IP# used by one of your nameservers you must change the registration of your nameserver at the registrar where your domain is registered. That can take up to 72 hours (according to what the registrars say).

None of this has anything to do with whether or not the server is the same, or even whether or not it's on the same pipe. The IP# is what's important.

If that changes you've got some downtime.

How can we prevent this downtime?

I'm having the same problem changing an existing domain name's ip address.

Is there any checklist around?

Just changing IP on the same server to for example give a domain a dedicated IP so it can have a secure cert shouldn't give more than a few seconds downtime - if any.

I tried to change the ip, and I failed miserably, my domain name points to two different ip.

www.domain.com points to the new one,
domain.com points to the old one.

My mail got lost, etc....

David,

Did you change your DNS zone file?

Check it as the problem is probably there.

I did not do anything except to change the ip address of my user in DA.

I checked the DNS configuration with my admin account and my user account, both says everything's pointing to the new location.

Is there some steps I missed to ensure that I don't lose data/mails?

Giving us the correct information, including the domain name and the IP# you expect it to point to, and the old IP#, would all be helpful.
