assign a server subdomain rather than shared ip urls?

Is there anyway so that when a customer signs up, they'd automatically get a subdomain like user1.myhosting.com ?

I've seen several hosting companies offer this and it seems to work a treat, much better than giving them shared IP url format that they can never remember.

Yes you can use a subdomain instead of a tld.

Yes I know you can but i mean like out of the box.

Wouldn't something like this be a more desired method? Instead of dealing with that shared ip string format which really not compatible with some php scripts that uses mod_rewrite?
