Backup ALL of DirectAdmin for Quick Restore

DirectAdmin was installed by DA staff on our server, I'm very concerned that in the event of a server crash it would take an unacceptable amount of time to restore DA to the same machine.

Obviously, the /home/ directory is backed up separately, as is MySQL, but I would like to backup DA ENTIRELY.

Is there a way of doing this, or do I need to look at disk imaging software? If so, does anyone have a recommendation?

I would have thought this would be the most important question asked on here, and yet there seems to be no accepted answer?

What could be more important!

Hello,

DirectAdmin has a "System Backup" tool on the Admin-level panel that can backup many essential system files and directories.

Is that what you are looking for?

Cheers, Phil.

Why would you want to?

I know it's a PITA, but I don't think there is a reliable way to do a full system backup and restore...

Interesting I was fixing to start doing some searching for backup strategies with DA.

You statement is interesting sullise can you expand on why you think that and what your backup strategy is?

Easier to just do a fresh restore a DA installation and then restore the user data. If you find a reliable and simply backup/restore stratagy, please feel free to share. :)

Makes sense I I guess. So you only backup user data to restore if needed.

What method are you using to back it up? Can you at least backup the user data using DA so you can recreate the user then use DA to restore them or do you do it all manually. Maybe I should have done some searching before I asked that, but since I typed it I will post it ;)

The system backup available from the DA admin pages, will (at least on relatively recent installations) by default back up everything you need to restore Everything "user". Even though it takes a few minutes (generally well under an hour) to reinstall DA, I'd say it's time well spent, since it updates everything to the latest supported default versions and makes sure there's nothing wrong with any of the major programs and daemons you need for hosting.

Note there is no restore built into the system backup; you'll have to manually restore. That's a good thing, since you can make sure you don't overwrite anything important, especially if you update your OS on it's reinstall.

Note: sysbk does run as root; you could use it to back up everything you want, including DA and all the programs you need, including the daemons.

Not recommended, though.

Jeff
