I think it would be very useful to allow account users to backup their own mailboxes, like in CPanel. In CPanel when a user creates a backup. it creates a tar file of the whole site including mailboxes and specially folders created by their webmail interface. I'm a reseller and frequently get this request specially from users that get their mail through webmail only, plus it gives a good feeling to the user that they can have control in backing up their mail anytime.
It is also useful for users that max their webmail qouta and want to keep important emails, because all they have to do is create a backup to preserve and archive their mail, and they can freely delete important emails from their current mailboxes.
The other reason is by personal experience I've been on servers where the server got hacked (more than once) and all the mail was lost, before users could pop their resent emails.
One more last reason, it facilitates the migration of users from another account or server that want to make their mail available on the server, because they use webmail or just like to keep a copy on the server.
Ok, I lied I have another reason, the competitor is doing it and it seems (correct me if I'm wrong) a simple fix. All we have to do is change the location where the mailboxes reside to be under the users account and may be some permissions changes.
