How do I create a physical backup server from my current DA server?

I ran the full system backup in DA interface, but issit possible to create another identical system running on another server, in case my current one goes down.

Some questions:

1) Doesn't everything have to fit on that recordable CD/DVD you're writing?

2) What happens if you've somehow damaged the actual OS? Can you rebuild the OS some other way, and then restore only what you want?

3) Can you easily use it to move a DA system from (for example) RHL9 to RHEL ?

Is there some way to do an offsite backup, or are you limited to having to have recordable media on the server, and then manually change it out?

Thanks.

Jeff (who is still struggling with the DA system backup utility, but looks like he'll get it done in another day or two).

1) Mondo Archive is a tool to backup a whole server, like Ghost. You specify how big ISO's have to be and it will create in case needed multiple ISO's (cd's). You can also choose to backup to other media like TAPE,HD and many others!

2) As said (1) you can rebuild the whole OS or just partical: files, dirs, partitions, disks etc. The GUI added to the backup, lets you easy specify wich files to restore or show the changed files etc. Many, Many options easy to handle.

3) Offcourse not, most backup don't implement these functions. DA has it's own backups wich is cross OS, because they're it's own files.

A backup tool can never predict wich dev file or configuration file must be installed on RHEL if it is backupped from RH 9.

Only way to do it is extracting files, dirs, partitions, but not a full restore on RHEL from RH9.

Hi Fusionictnl,

I tried to use mondo to create a complete BACKUP of a test system running CentOS 4. I had trouble earlier to get all the prerequisites installed, but it worked finally. It successfully create an ISO on the server itself. I downloaded the ISO and burnt it to a CD.

When I put the CD in to do a complete restore, it gave an error about couldn't mount the CD ROM and asked me to create a floppy. The CentOS4 kernel wont fit on a FDD according to their instructions, so I am not sure that what is wrong. Do you have any idea what we might be doing wrong?

thanks

I don't know if this has anything to do with your problem or not, but we recently discovered that we cannot build a server from a CentOS iso if the CDROM drive is connected through a USB port. We haven't had time to study this issue further as yet.

Jeff

thanks jeff.

We got it working today. I initially compiled mondo / mindi / mindi-busybox using tarballs, which didn't work. So I end up installing the above using the RPM's for CentOS4, which worked like a treat. I managed to get an ISO, which we then managed to restore to another server of the same family.

I just need to test if the iso can be used to do a bare metal restore on a different hardware now.

Thanks
