Bandwidth Out Of Control

I got an Auto Generated message saying my Bandwidth is exceeding my account limits.
It was going up by 400+Meg per day.
I closed virtually all plugins (except Akismet, si-capcha and Jetpack[for statistics).
That dropped the bandwidth leak down to about 308 Meg.
I added plugin 'prevent xmlrpc' just in case I was being spammed into net activity.
My two domains are at very low levels of activity.
Direct Admin Support email bounced and my Client Login acts like I don't exist.

Any suggestions?

Right!
*awstats* Bandwidth details* hmmm
I went into the 'log' that shows graphs of usage and the like.
All that is interesting, colourfull & etc., but what it shows is that, while we have very few page views over all, we are getting thousands of 'hits'.
I'm a bit at a loss to understand where all these hits are coming from, aside from a DOS attack.
For now I have avoided 'shut-down' by adding an extra 10 Gig to the bandwidth allowance.
For the record, since my Host also cannot come up with a clear fix, I have restored the plugins to active status and will watch to see how the domain runs for the rest of the month.
Perhaps there is a genuine problem, perhaps not. We may simply have outgrown our old system usage limits.
