Hi,
Total newbie who needed a dedicated server...

I asked the provider to install the version of FreeBSD they meant would be the best combination and they installed 4.11. Do you think this was a good choice or should I change to another version before starting to use ther server?

i've FreeBSD 4.11 (lots of older servers
which I've upgraded to 4.11 over time),
and also 5.3 and 5.4 on a few new
servers.

I've not seen any major issues myself, maybe
many issues posted here are related to the
install or what's been done on the server.

There's nothing wrong with staying
on the 4.x branch, just note there
are a few differences between 4.x and
5.x, mostly unimportant as long as you
understand both.

Since my knowledge of FreeBSD is close to NULL, that wont be a problem... Just make sure to keep updated with the latest patches (13 for 4.11 I've read) and keep others out of the system then.

Thanx for reply!

5.x tends to be more freindly (more settings changeable without reboot and easier to use rc.d scripts) I would advise setting up a new system with 4.x now considering the lifespan left in the branch unless the hardware is only compatible with that branch.
