I explain the problem with an example therefore is understood endured.

I create a subdomains "test.directadmin.com" and DirectAdmin add directory "test" in "public_html".
I go to "public_html" and click in "Protect".
I insert name, nick and password
and directory is protected:)

But if I go to http://test.directadmin.com i can't insert nick and password and visualize some contents of the directory

if i go to http://www.directadmin.com I MUST insert nick and password otherwise it gives error 403(it is right!).

It is a bug very much serious!!

More likely it's a limitation of the way the protected directory is being created.

I'd recommend using an .htaccess file if you're going to use a directory accessed as a subdomain.

When i protect directory, DA automatically set .htaccess ;) The problem is that if i go to directory(protected) from subdomain, i read its file without having to insert nick and password
if i access to directory from normal url, i can read its file only if i insert nick and password.
I use directadmin 1.26.2
