Hi,

I am looking at buying a small hosting customer base which are currently on cpanel.

Is there a process that I can follow to switch these customers to switch to DirectAdmin?

Obviously I dont own the cpanel server as that is owned by the company I am purchasing (or likely to) customers from.

Of the companies I've bought out, two have been cPanel. It's not easy to transfer them, but it can be do. L0rdPhi1's perl script is very helpful too :)

Hi Matt,

Cheers.

Out of interest. How have the clients taken to moving from cpanel to DirectAdmin? Were they aggrieved. Did you lose any, if so how many % wise? Or where they pleased, pleasantly surprised with DirectAdmin. Prior to buying the businesses where the customer base consulted about having to move to DirectAdmin.

I am interested as I am looking into acquiring customer bases, who seem to be predominantly hosted on cpanel servers from what i have seen, to grow the business moreso than trying to increase revenues thru day to day web hosting sales.

By switching to DirectAdmin I have lost 15 accounts because of a cgi scripting bug in DirectAdmin that everybody seems to hide and mask. DirectAdmin to Me is a very nice system and would be My choice if there wasnt such a big bug problem with cgi scripting. At this time and in order to hopefully gather back some of these clients I am busy switching back to c-panel. If someone knows why this control panel has so much problems with cgi or knows how to correct and fix it correctly, it would be greatly appreciated. I hope someone can help. John of DA said He has, but I must be honest at this time and say if You have alot of clients with cgi scripting DA isnt My choice, cause the problem still continues, but I hope They can make Me eat My words and fix it.
Thanx,

Whenever I was using c-panel I never had any problems with cgi scripts. In or outside the cgi-bin. Since getting a DirectAdmin Server I have had nothing but trouble with cgi perl scripting. You have to tweak this and toss that and place this to get a script to even possibly to work. To Me its not worth all this agrevation for supposedly being better than c-panel in many ways it is, but in this area it doesnt even come close to Me.

Are you talking about the fact the DA uses suEXEC? If so, this isnt a bug. This is for security. I actually find the implementation of suEXEC in some respects makes cgi scripts easier to install, for me personally anyway and I have no problems advising our customers either.

From what I know cPanel is very buggy generally, DA isnt. Think you need to weigh up the pros and the cons. So far the likes of cPanel appear to be the best as they currently have a very large installed base and some customers feel more comfortable with things that 'appear' to be the best. Are customers really leaving you because of cgi issues with DA?

I do weight the pros and cons, and when it starts to hurt My pocket book I have to go where the money is. Maybe You know something about DA I dont and I even had John from DA work on it also and still everytime someone tries to use cgi in Their account they cant. Maybe every once in awhile it works without a hitch, but 95% of the time it doesnt work for Myself or My Clients. I really wish it did tho....

I've been running DA on at least 15 servers for quite a while now, and have never encountered a "cgi-bug" - what specifically is the issue? Maybe with some details we can help?

I guess it is the suEXEC that everybody is talking about. It and I arent friends as I have one hell of a time when it comes to anything cgi and sometimes even php. I have had Tech Support at DA change things so that cgi should work but even with scripts that I have installed thousands of times when I go to install them on a DA Server they dont work period, or I have to get someone who knows the ins & outs of DA to get scripts working and I dont think that makes DA to user friendly. I am still a novice here and everybody seems to think that everybody knows everything. Heck Ive read some of these threads and get completely lost as They talk PuTTy this sh that ect ect. Why cant cgi just work here like it does with c-panel or is there a way to do that. Someone in one thread made it sound like if You disable suEXEC cgi would work like it does with cpanel or at least sorta like it but would eliviate the hassle that suEXEC causes.

We've never come across any problems with Perl or PHP scripts causing issues.
Most of the "problems" we've seen have been caused by people using incorrect paths, permissions or uploading perl scripts as binary.
If a script does not work there should be something in the logs that can help you get to the bottom of it.

Well in cpanel I never had any problems. My scripts all contain
#!/usr/bin/perl and /home/Myusername/domains/Mydomainname/public_html/cgi-bin I have had nothing but trouble with DA since I got this server. I even have the problem now that somehow My root control has become corupted and I am having a heck of a time doing anything on the admin side at all now... I guess I am not technical enough to tackle DA as ithas Me stiumped and everywhere I seem to turn for help the people there expect Me to have complete knowledge and I dont. I would love for someone to walk Me thru different aspects of DA I do like its basics but I cant stand the restriction that suEXEC causes.... I wish someone would take the time to help this novice get this server to function properly as all I hear is how good DA is but I cant experience it. Is there anyone that is willing to lend a hand....

What problems is the suEXEC causing? If the files are uploaded in ASCII and chmod 755 (and in the cgi-bin folder) they should be painless...
