Hi,

Me and my friend just recently got a hold of a server that uses DA. Honestly I am new with DA and not sure if my friend configured the nameservers fine. Our hosting company provided us with 5 virtual lan ip's to work with.

x.x.x.149
x.x.x.150
x.x.x.151
x.x.x.152
x.x.x.153

My friend setup nameservers as

x.x.x.151 ns1.domain.com
x.x.x.152 ns2.domain.com

He is also using that same domain name for ip x.x.x.149. so
his domain.com is using x.x.x.149
his nameservers are x.x.x.151 and x.x.x.152

I would like to use his nameservers for my domain which is set to use but for some reason I cannot add them to netfirms control panel. It always gives me DNS Failed error. Now I asked them about it and this is what they told me

my domain.com x.x.x.153
and use his nameservers
x.x.x.151 ns1.domain.com
x.x.x.152 ns2.domain.com

Thank you for your email inquiry.

We would like to inform you that the error you have provided has occurred as the name servers you wish to direct your domain name to are currently missing from the foreign registries. Registries such as those for .info, .biz, and .org maintain their own databases of registered, valid name servers, rather than going by the default .com/.net registry database; if the name server values are not registered, the aforementioned error occurs.

To correct the issue, please contact the administrator of the desired name servers and request that they register the name servers with the foreign registries. Usually this is done by having the DNS administrator log into their domain registrar's control panel. Once this action has been performed, you may then proceed with your desired name server changes.

Is this technically possible? I can ping both his nameservers but seems like there something wrong because when I try to ping ns1.domain.com it resolves to x.x.x.153..

Not sure if I am making sense here. TIA to everyone

Actually, ns1.domain.com resolves to 72.5.54.12, and x.x.x.153 isn't a valid address.

It appears you're asking us for help without giving us the information we need to give it to you.

Please look here for more information, if necessary.

But it appears from the resonse that the folk at netfirms gave you that the nameservers haven't been registered. The nameservers MUST be registered with the registrar where the domains are registered.

For example, if your domain is ns1.example.com, you must go to the registrar where example.com is registered, and register the nameserver. Just how that is done differs from registrar to registrart so if you don't know how to do it, you'll have to ask the registrar.

If you need more help then please give us real information; otherwise we can't even begin to help you.

The same problem with me. They told me the same, when I tried to change NS.

My DNS: ns1.hosting.itelecom.ru & ns2.hosting.itelecom.ru
My DNS's IPs: 83.102.130.102 & 83.102.130.98

Would you check what is wrong?

as mentioned above you need to register your name servers with your registrar for the domain name.

Mmm. Well. may be I'm lost? I can't register my NS, it won't allow me to to that. It didn't save my new settings, whenever I press an 'update' button.

Ok. How do I: "need to register your name servers with your registrar for the domain name" ? My registrar is NetFirms.

Many thanks.

He certainly would.

spamru: what you're doing is telling Netfirms to set your domain to these nameservers. What you need to do is have them register the nameservers with the Internet root.

The giveaway is usually that they're not asking you for an IP# but only a nameserver name. To register your nameserver they need the IP#s, to set your domain with the nameservers you only need the nameserver name.

If netfirms doesn't understand, you might ask them to register your hosts instead of your nameservers. Back in the old days they used to be called hosts.

Jeff would know about the old days.

But seriously that is helpful information. It explains why some registrars call them different things.

Well of course, Floyd. That picture of me I use as an avatar? It was taken back in the 40s. You can imagine what I look like now :).

By the way, I know you typed in the quote. Can you look closely and figure out how I know?

My eyes are still fairly sharp :).

Jeff

Well what I did was copy the quote and put it in the QUOTE tags but when you copy and past it does not keep the formatting. I really just wanted to feature old so I only italicized old and not days.

But I feel as old as you look. I don't know which is worse, to feel old or look old. At least I do not have to wear glasses yet.

I guess I should get back to the topic:
