Can't connect to FTP?

Hi there,

Was logging in via ftp this morning, and forgot/mistyped my password a few times. I then remember the password, and go to try again: nothing - I can't get anything on port 21 at all; things just time out whilst connecting (though HTTP and SSH work file).

I've restarted proftpd and had a look at the logs, which show nothing untoward. I've spoken to others not using my IP address, and they get prompted for a username and password as normal, so it would appear I've been locked out somewhere along the lines...

Any ideas?

Are you running CSF, APF or any other firewall system? It probably blocked your address temporarily.

iptables is running, but 'iptables --list' didn't show anything untoward either. I've now been allowed access again, but it'd be good to know where things went wrong in case a similar event happens again?

Thanks,

Some firewall systems may use /etc/hosts.deny or null routing instead of iptables, but if you are only running direct iptables rules... then I don't have a clue.

hosts.deny was also empty (and presumably would have taken out more than port 21 for me).

Thanks for the help anyway!

The hosts.deny file can certainly block only specific services.
