scenario 1:

I am able to send email from hotmail to my email without a hitch. I can't send from my email to hotmail.

Upon further testing, the only way I can get email sent to hotmail is within a reply to an email from hotmail themselves?

Anyone know why?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

A few people reported to me problems with email to DirectAdmin yesterday. I haven't heard anything since, and none of my emails to them have bounced.

I have the same hotmail problem as you!!!!

Horray!!!

Found someone who has the exact same problem.

So just to confirm the same problem

1. can send emails from any domain on my server - no problem
2. can send emails from 2 of my hotmail accounts anyway - no problem
3. can send emails to hotmail from any of my domains on my server, but are they received by hotmail - NO - in junk mail - NO.
4. send a hotmail email to an email account on one of my servers domains - received - reply to that hotmail email - Hey Presto!!! - Hotmail receives it.
5. use my isp's smtp to send the email from my server to the hotmail account and received okay!

Anyway have you found a solution to the problem?

Its been 1 week since i first realized it myself & i am surprised i havent gone insane yet!

regards

Simon

No, the problem has not been solved. rDNS for ns1 and ns2 GOOD. Hotmail is being picky so I don't know how to resolve this issue. I have contacted hotmail and are waiting for their reply. This really sucks.

Okay if I manage to get this sorted out I will let you know, but im not holding my breathe.

Please keep me informed on your progress.

Found a thread with the same problem.

My VPS ip isnt blacklisted anywhere that I can see. However that wont stop MSN blocking a whole ip range regardless.

Been in contact with MSN they want me to run lots of tests here

Here's their email reply

Hello Simon,

Thank you for writing to MSN Hotmail Technical Support. We apologize for the delay in answering your e-mail. We appreciate your patience as we handle every customer request as quickly as possible.

My name is Paul and I realize that you would like to know if your XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX server blocked because you cannot send messages to Hotmail members. I can imagine the inconvenience this may have caused you. I acknowledge the importance of addressing your concern immediately.

Simon, in order to help you with your issue, please advise your domain.com provider to visit our Postmaster site at http://postmaster.hotmail.com/Troubleshooting.aspx. This site provides troubleshooting information to those who are having issues sending e-mail messages to Hotmail. If your e-mail provider needs further assistance with their e-mail delivery issues, they will have to click on the second "here" link under "Sender services, tools, and issue submission" or submit the necessary information at: http://support.msn.com/eform.aspx?p...=support_home_options_form_byemail&ct=eformts

Ive got my VPS provider on the case as I do not have full access to run some of these tests - However my server comes with very little server management assistance so again im not holding my breathe.

regards
simon

Hello,

We have identified that messages from your IP *.*.*.* are being filtered based on the recommendations of the SmartScreen filter. SmartScreen is the spam filtering technology developed and operated by Microsoft. SmartScreen is built around the technology of machine learning. SmartScreen’s filters are trained to recognize what is spam and what isn’t spam. In short, we filter incoming emails that look like spam. I am not able to go into any specific details about what these filters specifically entail, as this would render them useless.

However, we also base our spam rating on the reputation of the sender. One way to positively impact the reputation of your IP is to obtain SPF/Sender ID records. This technology allows SmartScreen to better track emails from your IP, weeding out spoofed messages. You can find additional information on creating SPF records at http://www.microsoft.com/senderid

Please confirm that your emails comply with MSN Hotmail’s technical standards. This information can be found at: http://postmaster.live.com/Guidelines.aspx

It will also be helpful to send example emails to [email protected] from your MTA so that we can examine the types of emails that you send. This will help me in our investigation. When you do this please send me the subject lines of emails you have sent. Please make sure that these emails are functionally similar to the types of emails that originate from your system, as any deviation from this may hinder our ability to investigate your problem. Do not use the word, “Test” or anything that would change the email from the original message that was initially sent to Hotmail Customers.

I hope that the information that I have provided to you has been helpful. You may also be able to find additional information on common delivery questions at the Hotmail Postmaster Site found at: http://postmaster.msn.com/. I would like to highlight some key areas which I believe are appropriate to your company.

• Hotmail has created the Smart Network Data Services program. This is a service that helps legitimate email senders work with their customers and partners to reduce spam originating from their IP. http://postmaster.msn.com/snds/. This program allows a sender to monitor the ‘health’ of their IPs.

• I would also strongly recommend that you authenticate your outbound email via Sender ID and publish your SPF records for your outbound email IPs and register with Sender ID. You can find additional information at http://www.microsoft.com/senderID or you may email [email protected] for support. Please note that technical standards (RFC 4408) discourage use of "ptr" for performance and reliability reasons.

• Monitor user complaints. Hotmail also has a sender complaint feedback loop program Junk Email Reporting Program (JMRP). Enrollment in this, free of charge, program will benefit you as a sender as it will keep your e-mail lists updated and populated with interested MSN Hotmail Customers. Participation in this program will remove those MSN Hotmail Customers who do not want to receive e-mails from your company. If you are interested in joining this program please visit Http://support.msn.com/eform.aspx?p...=support_home_options_form_byemail&ct=eformts.

While using the SNDS tool, enrollment in the JMRP or having your IPs registered with Sender ID will not allow emails from your mail servers to bypass our filters, these are in place to help legitimate companies deliver their emails to Hotmail Customers.

• SenderScore Certified Mail Program. Many legitimate mailers and marketers have qualified and joined this “white listing” program to improve mail deliverability and decrease email from being filtered to the Junk E-mail Folder. Sender Score is a third party program, administered by Return Path. Sender Score (www.senderscorecertified.com) is the only White Listing service to which we subscribe.

Thank you,

Bobbi

What a bunch of BS. Why are they making it harder to email them?

What kind of crap is that? Render them useless? They are useless if they are blocking legit emails. Replied and waiting for their next reply... I think I need to beg so they can remove my IP from their blacklist (LOL)

Some of the biggest ISPs are the worst offenders. They have some extremely misguided policies.

From their point of view, they truly believe you're sending spam. Generally the reason they think you're sending spam is that from their point of view they are.

Here's what's most likely happening: you have some clients on your server with accounts with them. Those clients may have email addresses on your server and may be forwarding emails addressed to [email protected] to their address at the ISP. Then when the email gets to the ISP, it's identified as spam (because let's face it; a lot of it is). And all their ISP knows is that email identified as coming from your server (remember the only believable server address in the email headers; the only one that can't be forged, is the one immediately before them).

Another possibility is that some of your clients have broken form-to-email scripts which have been hacked and are actually being used to send spam; while this is less likely, you need to consider it.

We had a similar problem yesterday with Verizon (a company with systems in place that some of us believe quite ridiculous; one of them was recently written up in a major industry magazine), we went through their hoops, and in less than an hour we got an email that we were being whitelisted in their filters.

Begging doesn't help because everything, probably including the email you got, is automated. The best thing to do is to take the steps they tell you to take.

Additionally, we recommend to all our clients that they set up their local mail programs to read their email on our server, rather than forward it, and also that they use their own ISP's server for outgoing email.

And of course when a problem occurs because of a particular ISP, we're not too embarrassed to blame them.

You might also want to go to the http://postmaster.aol.com site and set up a loop so any email from your server reported to them as spam gets sent back to you; since most spammers send a lot of emails to aol accounts, this acts as a great early warning system of any real problems you're having.
