can't update PID file

Referring to this: http://help.directadmin.com/item.php?id=44

I'm trying to up the max_packets_allowed setting to 2x the size. The page lined above references 16M so I'm thinking 32M, just temporarily albeit.

However, when I follow the instructions, I find my.cnf is completely empty. So I copy the code on that page, make some adjustments, ctrl-c shift-z shift-z and done.

service mysqld restart however now says,

ERROR! MySQL server PID file could not be found!
Starting MySQL... ERROR! The server quit without updating PID file (/var/lib/mysql/cp.terascape.net.pid).

Any ideas how I can get this accomplished?

What do you see with

cat /var/lib/mysql/cp.terascape.net.err

?
