Hi, I have some questions regarding CentOS:

1- Does updating the CentOS from 3.4 to 4.2 make the server more secure, run better or recommended?

2- Can CentOS be updated (while retaining its data) from 3.4 to 4.2? If yes what is a fair/going charge for the update?

3- Can this be done by anyone or must it be by the data center?

4- Is it worth it?

Not now. CentOS 3.x updaes will stop about a year before CentOS 4.x update stop but by then you'll probably be able to update to 6.x or even 7.x, and get even more life until the next update.

CentOS is an open-source compile of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux source code, specifically designed to avoid the need to update versions more often than once ever four to five years.

I'm not sure; unless someone else responds definitely, I'd say ask on the CentOS support users-list.

If it can be done then it may be doable by simply changing the repositories in yum.conf. Note that even if the experts say it's doable you could run into problems as it may update libraries of which certain programs require older versions. You'd definitely have to get a new license of DA and then run customapache and perhaps update some other programs as well.
4- Is it worth it?
Not to us. We see no reason to do it or to worry about it until updates stop.
