Back when I first setup my server I had problems with network solutions transferring my domain name and such so I had to go with a backup domain name for the server named modemnet.biz. So what I did with DirectAdmin was create the server of server1.modemnet.biz and had DA installed on it.

Now that the Network Solutions issue is straightened up I would like to change the server name to server1.modemnet.net inside DA in the "Admin Settings" area. If I made that change along with the DNS server change, what adverse affects would I be looking at towards customers? Anything mroe than just a DNS propigation update?

Has anyone else tried this before?

We've changed hostnames before and have not had a problem. As far as I know, it's safe as long as you do it through the control panel.

You will have to set up DNS manually for the .net domain to make sure it points properly to your server.

There won't even be any propagation issues if you make sure DNS is active for the .net domain and pointing properly to the server before you make the switch.

Does changing in the DA control panel also handle changing it in the apache http.conf and other files?
