I tried to chmod a file with filezilla thats in my VPS. I only want to chmod a particular file, but filezilla will just act like its done it but then when I return i see it quite clearly hasnt chmoded anything.

I read you have to chmod in vps with ssh. Tried WinSCP but horrified to see it looked just like Filezilla, so I got Putty.

Is this what I should be doing or should I do it through Directadmin? In either case, how?

Vps has nothing to do with chmod. I dont see why your ftp client wouldnt work. You should be able to chmod fine with an ftp client or with the file manager built into directadmin. Your ftp client should log if its doing anything or not. You also can login to directadmin admin level and go to log viewer and find the proftpd logs. Try to find an error somewhere.
