Conection Mysql/Java with ODBC

I'm currently conceiving a wabsite with Jsp/Javabeans and Mysql tecnologies. On my local computer, I'm using an ODBC conection, and it seems that I can't connect me directly to my database Mysql without ODBC.
Is there a way to use my conection ODBC with your server?
Or, have you some suggestions for me!

You can configure MySQL however you want. This is a question more suited to the #mysql channel on irc.freenode.net or MySQL support.

On a side note, did you configure the remote host that will be attempting to contact the database?
